New Blu Ray & DVD

Anyone buy The Lord of the Rings 4K UHD trilogy boxset?

It has both the theatrical and extended editions.

I just wish they would put the extended editions on one disk.
Yes I know they are longer, but they had 2 disks for the DVD and blu-ray releases as well, surely there is enough space on the 4K discs?

Anyway, what were the 4K movies like compared to the blu-ray?
Apparently 4K is supposed to be 5 times better.

I think we can expect another 4K release though as I don't think this one has all the extras like the DVD extended ones did. Milk it for what it's worth I guess...

Coming on November 24th on #4K and Blu-ray in the UK from @StudioCanalUK: The #AgathaChristie Collection Featuring:
  • MurderOnTheOrientExpress (1974)
  • DeathOnTheNile (1978)
  • TheMirrorCrackd (1980)
  • EvilUnderTheSun (1982)
Essential viewing for any fan of Agatha Christie, this lavish collection of beloved classics contains three Poirot mysteries perfectly complimented by a Miss Marple outing. Sidney Lumet’s Academy Award-winning MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS stars Albert Finney in his only incarnation as the Belgian sleuth Poirot. Ingrid Bergman won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role, a feat she repeated at the BAFTAS where the film had 10 nominations in total. Peter Ustinov then exercised his “little grey cells” as Poirot in the subsequent DEATH ON THE NILE and EVIL UNDER THE SUN, supported by an equally stellar cast that included Jane Birkin and Maggie Smith in both films, Bette Davis, Mia Farrow, David Niven, James Mason, Roddy MacDowall and Diana Rigg. Finally, everyone’s favourite crime-solving lady, the Academy Award-winning Angela Lansbury, who moved from a supporting role in DEATH ON THE NILE to centre stage as Miss Marple in THE MIRROR CRACK’D. The list of luminaries that graced the cast lists of these films illustrates the quality of these archetypal British mysteries: Geraldine Chaplin, Tony Curtis, Edward Fox, Rock Hudson, Kim Novak, Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Jacqueline Bisset, Sean Connery, Anthony Perkins, Michael York and Vanessa Redgrave.

EXTRAS
Boxset includes 64 page booklet with brand-new essays plus x 4 posters
Note: Individual disc extras will be in the following individual release posts.

Buying a PC Bluray drive allows you full region free watching and complete ripping.
There are also region free Bluray players one can import as well (from Oppo, Pioneer, Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung), I own one, not BD 4K compatible as I got that one a decade ago.

For example there is the Mac Go Bluray player.

A Windows version of the same player also exists:

The demo version works as well. No need to purchase it.

MakeMKV is an excellent way to rip all kinds of Bluray movies for backup reasons. Demo version is also fully functional and free.

There are two Bluray formats.

The original Bluray was 1080P. It uses 1-2 layers per disc.
There is also a 4K Bluray format which has 4K resolution. It uses up to 4 layers per disc.

Older Bluray players are not compatible with Bluray 4K.

4K movies have more pixels so are sharper, so you can view them on a larger TV and still have a good sharpness.
Also I think 4K Bluray has HDR, while standard BD may or may not have it.

In general the quality of the Bluray movie will be superior because I think higher bitrates are used on the physical media, while streaming tries to save bandwidth. Some Bluray movies also come with download links for the movies in digital format, but that's geolocked.

For example this Bluray (which I own) has a link to Funimation to also watch the same content online, but you have to be in the US.

Thanks, yeah I know the 4K will be better, I was just wondering if there was anyone who had seen both the Blu-ray and the 4K versions and could comment on the actual real world difference.

If you have a console like a PlayStation then you already have one. You can get bespoke premium players but those will cost you.
My PS3 disc drive gave up on me. I was hoping to not have to spend R12k for a disc version of ps5 to get a new one.

I bought my Samsung blu ray player from someone here on mybb :)

Sad that new ones are so hard to find in SA.

Watched a YouTube review of the uHD LOTR boxset a while ago.
The reviewer compared lots of footage and was quite disappointed in the UHD versions.
Will search for the video and share if I find it.

Hmm disappointing to be honest.

Will wait for the inevitable 4K release with extras included.

Will probably be the same 4K video but hey one can hope.

Do Blu-ray and 4K discs also suffer from "disc rot"?

Edit: To answer my own question, when asking Google it spat out this video:
