Questions like this have probably has been asked several times on this forum?
I need a little help on a small network problem.

Set-up:
ADSL Router(one Port) with 384Kb connection.
16 Port Switch
8 Computers on the network all using XP
Router connected to switch.

What would help me limit bandwidth on my network, be it software or hardware.
I am trying to sort out a potential bandwidth argument here at home as we have my Nephew playing Battlefield, my son playing Conquer and mom and I pay a little Counterstrike when we feel like it.
During all of this we would also like to browse websites, send and receive mail, without lagging out anyone playing games on the network at the same time.

I have read a little about IP Cop and Bandwidth Limiters, but I have been warned about using software to curb bandwidth as it may not help with the ping/latency which is the real issue here.

I am not a Linux Fundi, but do know of people that could help.
Is there some way even using XP, that can sort out bandwidth into chunks so that one computer cannot hog the whole bandwidth, sending my Nephew into a state of gaming anger as he lags out?

You could try BWmeter, I use it to check all the bandwitdh being use on all the PC's in the house. You can also set limits of say 1byte up/down.(Any unit, KB,kb,mb etc)

I would BWmeter a go. Dont know if it will solve the lagging problem tho?

I've heard that battlefield chows allot of bw.

About 15Kb per person with voice enabled?

This is part of the problem.
The moment one starts to browse BF is compromised.

i'm having the same problem, a users in my network abusing the bandwidth... I download the BWMeter and installed it but i have no idea on how to set the speed limit on a particular i.p address... can anyone teach me?

Well, I hug my ClarkConnect Box everyday, need an old PC lying around though..

It works beautifully, my VOIP traffic is prioritised, and it makes a noticeable difference.

my situation is same with the 1st post by BTTB, all the computers are networked by modem router and switch...

Set up Untangle with QOS. It will allow you to both monitor and limit the rate of certain ports.

8 PCs sharing a 384k line is stretching it a bit, even if just browsing.... upgrade to 4mbit lol
