Last week I signed up with OpenWeb to make use of their 5gb IS fibre service, as I liked the idea of having unshaped access at night. The setup went fine (IIRC I set everything up on Tuesday last week). Last Thursday, my gf and I went to house sit a friend's place and we took our pc's with us. My brother, who lives in the flat next door also went away on Friday, and when he got back, he informed me that he couldn't connect to the Web.

When I got back home on Monday afternoon, I tried re-entering my OpenWeb account details into my router, only to be told that the password was incorrect. Tried calling OpenWeb's support only to find out that unlike my previous (excellent) ISP, Webafrica, their support desk is only open Monday-Friday during business hours and not on long weekends.

At this point I called Webafrica and bought a gig of prepaid, which worked just fine until it ran out this morning. I got a call from my brother again asking what to do, and I told him to use the OpenWeb details, but that he should call support because the password they gave me which worked before is now incorrect. Well, he tried that password anyway before he called their support and it worked now... the only problem is, there was no bandwidth left on the OpenWeb account.

When I checked out my usage on IS's site, it indicates that 2gb was upload and 2gb download on Friday, and 500mb up and 500mb downloaded on Sat. Remember, on Friday, nobody was home, and on Sat, my brother couldn't get online.

I called OpenWeb who informed me that all I can do is file a bandwidth theft charge at the police station and then send them the case number for tracking with Telkom. I asked Alan a OpenWeb if I could get a refund on my bandwidth if I provided a police case number and his reply was: "if your BMW gets stolen, BMW doesn't give you a new one, so no."

Is this really the case? Do I have no recourse with my ISP or with IS if somebody illegally used my bandwidth.

Also, it's worth noting that in the 2 years I was with Werbafrica, this never happened, but in my first week with OpenWeb I get my bandwidth stolen.... how did somebody get hold of my ISP account info?

no they don't give you a new one, but they also don't give other people sets of keys of YOUR car... or do they? or this is this only an openweb feature?

I've seen quite a few of these Openweb stole bw stories... i'd steer clear of these okes...

Blue... do a search! :)

also its amazing that amounts upper and downed are basically the same

i mean normally if your downloading torrents or whateva you would say 2 down and 900 meg upped

strange stat that

Yeah, it was only slightly more down than up. Like 100-200mb, if I recall. Oh and it was from an IP in Durban North.

If you leave your router password default, YOUR BW WILL BE STOLEN, not just openweb

Its like leaving your front door open and hoping that no one will steal your stuff

Well said - I was just about to ask the same myself. Also be weary of neighbours is close proximity if you use a wireless setup.

Does it say the port ID of each connection from your usage statistics? It would be interesting to report the other party using your line.

Apart from that, please check your router's access logs and activity readings and inform reply if you see anything interesting (or don't for that matter).

I must say I love the port locking functionality of WebAfrica. Stops things like this from ever happening again. It is a pain though when somebody at telkom goes into the exchanges and swops the ports around :(

Agreed that neighbours close proximity is more than wearying .... :D

Hi Bluecollar

I am so sorry to hear about your bandwidth being stolen.

I'm afraid bandwidth theft is quite big in South Africa, and most certainly does not just happen to clients using OpenWeb accounts.

When a client reports bandwidth stolen, the first course of action is to change the password.

We then request that the client takes the case to the SAPS. This forces Telkom / Internet Solutions to do an investigation into the matter. Telkom can then reveal the telephone number of the person who stole the bandwidth, and you will then have the option of laying a charge against them.

If you can email me your username, I will check whether there were any concurrent connections on your account, other than yourself. You will then know whether this bandwidth was stolen with an ADSL line, or whether it was taken via your wireless link / router / connection.
