I am not in a happy place right now, so I must confess that I let two banks really have it today. Here is my confession -

1. Standard Bank lost my application to open a business bank account. I completed it, they couriered it to my co-director in Rustenburg, but that branch denied receiving it. I have to re-apply. I told the guy at the Sandton office that they are mediocre.

2. Some clerk at FNB in Machadodorp (:D) refused to help one of our farm employees open a bank account, even though they did so for 2 of our other employees on the exact same set of info last year. He was also extremely rude to our employee (a man who is not very sophisticated or even used to 'modern sytems' like banking, so he must have been doubly intimidated). I told the guy at FNB that he is a rude little **** and I will report his branch to the Banking Ombudsman.

Well, they deserved it! I find few things as relaxing as having a good shout at some incompetent fool who was unlucky enough to be in the wrong place, at the wrong time

Mmmmm, good job!

If you give me the little idiot from FNBs contact details I'll give him some governmental sheet too.

Banks started the crap a while ago, no bank account for people without permanent residence. So his fica was outstanding? I had the same problem, but with standard, and they came to my house to verify on site..try that perhaps.

The trouble is this anger is usually directed at the wrong people and only serves to make you feel better about yourself with no real benefit.

As regards your employee, things may have changed in terms of requirements since last year. People tend to bitch and complain but FICA was implemented for a reason. I for one have no problem with the banks, or any financial institution, insisting that I prove my identity and residential address.

When the 2 female employees applied last year, they accepted a letter from us - as owners of the farm - as proof of their residence.

Now they want the ESKOM account, plus proof that we really are shareholders of the company in whose name the farm is registered, etc.

So they are in actual fact extremely inconsistent when it comes to requirements for applications.

Yes, the same reason i can not take nail clippers on a plane, or more than 100ml toothpaste, 9/11 ring a bell?

The issue that made me lose it with him, was that he was incredibly rude to someone who could be a potential client and who, if he succeeds in opening his account (which he did by the way) contributes to this dip****'s salary. Who the **** does he think he is in talking to someone in such a rude way? I have no time for ****ers who go around using the little authority they have to impair the dignity of others.

Hence the reason I do not mind if they asked for DNA when opening an account... I have nothing to hide and therefore am happy to provide whatever is needed to weed out the criminals.

Yes, I agree with people abusing authority but I have, on numerous occasions, been witness to clients going off at tellers when they are merely following the rules and orders handed down to them by their employers, who are the actual ones to pay their salaries. Bending the rules is what gets financial institutions into problems....
