What times can one expect with a 6 months old laptop

Varies a lot, depending on the hardware, what tasks you perform, etc. My notebook is almost 1 year old and is still giving me about 3 hours of heavy use (4 hours of low-use)

You running the provided Vista Basic? Which HP 530 do you have? I have the GH638AA and as per my earlier post, I get 3 - 4 hours

Not any more Running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3). I believe I have the KD092AA.

Not any more Running Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 3). I believe I have the KD092AA.

I get 3 - 4 hours on XP SP2 and Ubuntu 8.04... Didn't know there'd be THAT much of a difference between models! I guess your faster processor is more power hungry? Mine's a T2050

Mine has a T2400. Although I suspect that my normal usage is a bit more resource intensive than the average user's

Do you have the integrated wireless enabled? Because that might influence the battery life quite a bit.

I have an HP widescreen 15.4" with a Core 2 Duo and a lovely Nvidia GPU.... if I play nicely with word/coding I get 2h. If I try my best to finish the battery it goes down to 1h20.....
