Bay firefighters robbed at gunpoint

Three Nelson Mandela Bay firefighters were robbed while busy extinguishing a fire in the Zwide area. Acting Safety and Security Head, Warren Prins, said their cell phones were taken as they arrived on the scene on Wednesday.

He called the robbery at gunpoint disturbing, considering the fact that firefighters were there to help.

From where I am it looks bad.

Is there another country in the world where firefighters, paramedics etc need armed escorts to do their work. I worked in places like Soweto, Daveyton in the late 80's early 90's and even with all that was going on medics and firefighters were less of a target.

They're using water from the quarry. The sea is too far away now for the urgency required to put that fire out.

Not sure, currently there seems to be two helicopters dousing the flames with water from the Lafarge quarry in Cotswold. It looks like they are busy dousing behind PnP Hypermarket.

I hope the pilots and the choppers can get a break soon; it must be nerve-wracking work to be doing this for 9+ hours straight.

I can see them out of my window and they seemed to have taken a break for about 20 minutes, possibly to refuel and then to change crew.

I also heard that it got quiet for a bit. Our dogs are pretty rattled from the noise, so they are also enjoying the reprieve from the commotion outside.
