Hi guys

I was wondering if any of you currently work at BBD or have worked there in the past? Can you maybe tell me if they are worth it as an employer? What is the working environment like?

Thanks

Big Boob developers?

They must be awesome to work for :p

I answered the advert for an envelope follower but found it might involve some travel, mostly at night, so after talking it over with the wife, I decided to give it a go for 6 months or so. The office was very dark on account of having black-out curtains and a dull red-glow from the lighting. Tea was at 10h00 sharp and there were free theatre tickets for married women

Does this sound like the same place you want to go to?

Hahahahah! No, I'm sure it is not.:p The BBD is short for Barone, Budge & Dominick (Pty) Ltd. They are most widely known as BBD. They are the biggest software development house in the country.

@VernD, that would be wonderful, thanks.

I have worked with these guys they seem very well informed and have top notch developers.

I worked there for a few years and they're better than a few of the development shops I've encountered. Not sure if they're the biggest, but they've been around for more than 25 years and employ around 250 full-time developers, project managers and business analysts.

The working environment is high-pressure (as one expects for a dev-focused place), but the salaries are decent

I've worked at their headquarters in JHB, and enjoyed it.

I know a few people who have worked for them - no complaints.

I very much doubt that if none of the guys here knew who they even were (including me)

You did say you were a good developer, right? And you haven't heard of BBD? Suppose you missed the banners at Microsoft events.

And you haven't heard of BBD?

Haha, I think it depends on the circles you work in (eg. Java?)

Everywhere I've worked there were DVT developers, they are quite well represented in the Java community. Never heard of BBD however.

Well, it is the claim they make on their site and the recruiting company I have talked to also said they are. It may be under some specific category, but that is all I know.

Went for the test, passed the test, they made me an offer about 5k less than I was earning at that time, I told them I would take the offer if they matched my current package...

Apparently working for them will make up for the loss of 5k per month...so I was told...

But they are one of the good dev houses - if you can get in, go for it!

I hear they have free vending machines...you can make up R5k easy :p

I know 2 people who worked there. They both say it depends on what project you work on. It is a very high stress environment and they really push their developers. The one guy put in a lot of all-nighters while he was working there

edit: My boyfriend & a friend of his both went for the screening test fresh out of varsity. Apparently it was very difficult, but I'm not sure how it will be for someone with actual working experience

LOL!! They do! But my car does not run on coke and coffee!

Difficult is relative - test was not very acedemic in nature - more practical - so more work experience (in my opinion) would make it "easier"

They are a very well known company. If you are still young and need experience, I think you should go for it. Not a good company for a family person.

Your body does - get fit. :p

A good development house won't look bad on your CV either. If people recognize companies you've worked for, and you've done well there - it does wonders for your career. In today's world, you need to suck it up and take the hit while you still can.

All in all, I haven't heard anything really bad about them. I am going to switch careers, so joining a quality dev house is one of the things I am most concerned about. The package they offer me doesn't worry me much if I can get some experience and be part of a young, energetic working environment. Seems like this might just be the case. Thanks guys
