BBD - Good employer

I think at least 3 programmers that worked for my current company went on to join them.
I just know they earn around twice, but they were very good as programmers to get the job, don't know about the actual work there.

I hear they have free vending machines...you can make up R5k easy :p

Free vending machines, proper filter coffee machines, platters of finger snacks every friday morning, a fully stocked free bar that opens on fri at 3pm - havent heard of many companies that offer this.

I know a few great guys there and I've passed the screening test twice, it's not all that difficult (its basic programming logic with dot net context ).
If you don't carry your own weight its not the company for you, there are a lot of really experienced developers there and they will get irritated with you (as at any shop,).
Open bar, free vending, big parties is all true; its a great environment if you are a good developer and can carry your own weight.

Place sounds like a hell hole.

Expected to work late and you have to take a pay hit. Who looks on that as a positive career move.

All companies look at your current package to determine skill level and what to pay you. Moving down means you hurt you career IMHO.

I would only hurt my career if it were to work for a company like Amazon.com (which would do wonders for a CV) or because I get offered incredible benefits (eg. no overtime).

But to move to a lower income for snacks and then you are expected to work overtime? And developers need to "carry their weight" (usual douche bag warning that there are big egos involved).

Oooh k.

Just my 2c.

So I currently work at BBD, so let me clear some things up here a little ;)

Any job with deadlines you are going to be expected to work late. It's not an every day occurrence. Normal days you work your 8 hours which is flexi time so you can come in late or early.

I don't agree with the carry your weight thing or at least I've never seen any of that here. There's no douche bag egos around (in my team at least) and everyone is more than willing to help you out if you need it. They are constantly having courses you can attend to gain more experience in different aspects.

As for free snacks, free drinks and big parties...true story :p Our end of year function this year we had a giant party with live bands which included The Parlatones, Jack Parrow, DJ Fresh, Mi Casa and Flash Republic.

BBD has always had epic year-end parties, including renting out the Valley of Waves and putting up the whole company plus partners at Sun City. The catering alone almost makes it worth working there! LOL

I worked there for 3 1/2 years, extremely high pressure project with a very public client. It was fun but i valued my free time more than i vauled what they offered, i found their salaries not to be market related i am earning double now what i was getting there and this is about just over a year ago i was there.

There entrance assessments are piss easy.

8 Hours LOL.You where expected to work about 15hours when i was there, and there are A LOT of douche bag egos I lost count actually.

And yay they throw nice functions to be honest give me a bigger bonus and better increase and keep your party crap.

Suppose it depends on the person, I don't mind working 15 hours a day when necessary, probably because I'm paid per hour :p

I've been working there for the last 2.5 years (same team as semaphore did). Very public and difficult client to work for, work gets intense but they do reward you well.

That entry test is indeed more practical. It's not something you can study for. Either you know what you are doing or you don't.

The environment differs from team to team but the company is very social. Sometimes I rock up there in shorts and flip flops and work flexi hours which helps with the traffic.

...did I mention we have a free bar on the premises?

I still work for them. Nobody is going to give you more than this:

You have three hours which is more than enough.
It is a practical test (so you code).
It's not something you can or should study for - you can either do it or you can't.

Hahahahah! No, I'm sure it is not.:p The BBD is short for Barone, Budge & Dominick (Pty) Ltd. They are most widely known as BBD. They are the biggest software development house in the country.

@VernD, that would be wonderful, thanks.
Every second software house claims to be the biggest in the country... :p
