BBM for Android, iPhone available this week

Too many IM can't even catch up, we already have WeChat, Whatsapp, etc too many for me, ;)

What exactly is crappy about BBM? Have you used it on Android or iOS yet? Having BBM as exclusive has no advantage when your market share is very small. So I don't see how this makes the situation worse, will actually be great for current BBM users because they will be able to chat to more people.

Let me put what I said to you in a way you will understand.

1. BB Devices are crap.
2. BB OS is crap.
3. BB App world is crap.
4. BBM is too late to the market for cross-platform.

Yes it will be great for current users. But it doesn't help BB. Now if I had to use BBM (As many do for work) - I don't have to have a BB Device now do I?

So more lost revenue for the firm.

Crappy messenger as in WhatsApp has been here and dominated. BBM is...like that old smelly teddy bear you don't want to hug anymore.

Told my girlfriend to ditch her blackberry cause BBM is coming to other OS platforms, she asked if its coming with BIS I said NO and she said fine thanks I'll stick with my blackberry...

people don't really care about BBM on their blackberries, it's the only thing that works on that phone
Can old blackberries function without BIS?

Great its about time, theres no doubt that BBM is better than whatsapp, read reports, better contacts display better groups handling, better privacy.BBM also just somehow feels much more slick and modern.Ill be installing this on the weekend as will MILLIONS of others.

:)

1. BB Devices are crap.

I agree some what, they are over priced for what you are getting, but not crap, just over priced relative to the competition.
2. BB OS is crap.

Nope its actually pretty slick and smooth and modern to use,I use BB OS 10,android and IOS and out of the three OS10 is the most modern and pretty slick to use.
3. BB App world is crap.
Yep they are lacking apps, there are quite a few nice big named apps on there but no where close to android or IOS app store. This an issue of you are a big app person.

4. BBM is too late to the market for cross-platform.

Hopefully not,BBM as implemented in OS10 is the bes IM app on the market today,I'm hoping they get market traction as I would rather use this instead of whatsapp,I'm looking forward to deleting whatsapp.

Well at the rate that social networks are valued these days it might no be a bad thing for BB as a device and services company to go just services since they are worth a mere 5 billion while services/social network co's are worth more take facebook and skype and twitter as possible examples, its no secret that BB has pretty much not gone ahead in the hardware race, they might as well concentrate on their software devisions.

So more lost revenue for the firm.

Or a way out. They could transform into a services business, only loss would be jobs in the change unfortunately but in the long run it may just work out for them if BBM takes on.

Whatsapp was just a filler app for everyone that wanted BBM,Yes it has got a lot of momentum on its side and BBM should have been released sooner but theres no doubt BBM is a better app.

1GB costs R49 now...same as bis....with BBM on android that reasoning goes out the window.
Even BB's have FUP's now....so no use there....move on bud ;)

It does actually keep the platform alive.

People think BBM is an app... its an entire network, a secure messaging platform and a pioneer.

I see the moaners and haters here fall in to serveral groups

- People who never had a BB and lost friends when it was big and they were cut out of the BBM loop.
- Had a partner with a BB and they were ignored because they did not have a BB
- People who were forced to have a BB and work and they never got over that.

Sure... I get that they are bitter. But BBM is the better platform. Its bizzare that no one else has built something similar, perhaps they knew that RIM would give it away eventually.

They are pretty late with this, but I will install it. Many of my friends are happily using BlackBerrys.

So how will this work ? Will u get a soft pin or something ?

Nope.

Social networks will be flooding with Pins.

Also nope.

This might be worth doing an article on actually. BBM got an overhaul along with BlackBerry OS. If it's anything like BBM on BB10, you'll be able to connect to contacts using their Blackberry ID, any email address, or cellphone number (SMS).

The PIN is dead (thank Hitchens!)

If this is true, they've killed the only advantage BBM had over the other IM's.

How so? You still have to register for a BlackBerry ID (which is essentially an email address/password combination of your choosing), you're just not forced to have to exchange BlackBerry IDs (formerly PINs) to connect to BBM users like before.

Sometimes you don't want to give your email address or phone number to somebody. You can give them your BBM pin instead and then you have complete control over whether or not they can communicate with you. Makes it difficult to spam you for one thing and when you get a bbm message you know it's from someone you've given permission to. Permission that can be revoked at any time.

I suspect you're wrong anyway. Their press release clearly states:
You control it. BBM allows you to choose your contacts and how you share your information. BBM uses a PIN so you don't have to give anyone your phone number or email address.
and
Your unique PIN - Every BBM user has a unique PIN that maintains your privacy, so you don't have to give out your phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.

Im just going to say this again.

using BBM on android or iphone or even a windows phone is like trying to save the sinking ship rather than just saving the people on said ship.

Friends don't let friends use IE, and friends don't let friends buy a Blackberry

People do not use IE for technical, performance and security issues. Could you let me know what technical, performance or security issues there will be with bbm?

Nope.

Sorry, but you are wrong!

BBM for Android and iPhone features:
BBM Chat – Enjoy real, immediate conversations with friends on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphones. Not only does BBM let you know that your message has been delivered and read, it also shows you that your friend is responding to the message.

More than chat – With BBM you can share files on your phone such as photos and voice notes, all in an instant.

Keep your group in the loop – Multi-person chats are a great way to invite contacts to chat together. BBM Groups lets you invite up to 30 friends to chat together, and go a step further than multi-chat by sharing photos and schedules. And, with Broadcast Message, you can send a message out to all your BBM contacts at once.

Post Updates and stay in the know – BBM lets you post a personal message, profile picture and your current status, and lets your contacts know instantly in Updates.

Your unique PIN – Every BBM user has a unique PIN that maintains your privacy, so you don’t have to give out your phone number or email address to a new or casual contact.
