BBM on iPhone, Android: too late?

I will use it, when it comes out. Ditching Blackberry now though, not waiting for the app to come out first.

Bad Bad move. Either 2 years back or never.

When it comes time to upgrade, the only thing making users choose BB again is the fear of loosing their BBM contacts and the hardware keyboard.

I see this as a way for many people who were "locked in" by BBM to finally leave BB

The only reason I'll install the BBM app on my iPhone is to prevent giving my phone number to a stranger and rather give them my BBM pin number.

The rest of the time, I'm very happy with Whatsapp.

I think Whatsapp caught everybody napping, but mostly BB. They can only but try, but, methinks, too late.

I think Blackberry has been just a little too late with everything they've done over the past few years and bringing BBM to other platforms is no different. That said I've never met a blackberry user that really enjoyed Whatsapp. I personally found it to be buggy and a major resource hog when I was still had a blackberry so I'll definitely install BBM on my iOS devices since it really doesnt bother me having multiple chat apps.

At least BBM smileys have titles and you can delete entire conversations.
Peolple will soon use bbm on their Androids and ditch Whatsapp.
Whatsapp will be the ultimate loser.

Your whatsapp hangs too when trying to delete long chats?

What about Google Talk (Hangouts)? It works on EVERY phone out there, can still remember the java versions on my old Nokia and has been around way longer than BBM and Whatsapp. But yes I myself rarely use it, wonder why it is so unpopular as a messaging client as you can use it on pc, phone and tablet.

To Quote from the article:"You cannot help but wonder what might’ve been had BlackBerry"....XYZ. Blackberry has been napping and been behind the curve for so long they're effectively finished. Now that the BIS free internet thing is also over, they are REALLY finished.

I'm not fond of the WhatsApp UI. It's ugly...

If BBM for iPhone looks better I will use it. It also helps that I still have some friends who swear by BlackBerry.

I had a BB on a two year contract and yes I was a BBM addict but what I noticed was that I chatted mainly to a few people regularly out of all my contacts.

Now on my S3, as beautiful as WhatsApp is, it is annoying that anybody who has my number is able to reach me. This on top of the "last seen" feature of WhatsApp.

I believe that BBM on Android will be successful if only for the reason that 1) person A has to be given a special PIN to add person B as a contact (and person B is probably the one who gave out the PIN) and person B has to explicitly accept such invite, also 2) there is no "last seen" feature on BBM.

My prediction is that BBM uptake on iOS and Android will be big but will not reduce the numbers of the other apps user numbers.

Having just made the move from a BB to a Samsung S4, Whatsapp picked up where I left BBM. Make no mistake though, this WILL cause many more people to move away from Blackberry devices as IMO, BBM was their last exclusive feature worth having.

i couldnt agree more. This move from BB will be the whatsapp killer...mark my words 12 months from now

Will it be a paid app?

Just asking, as already mentioned, there won't be an incentive for people to stick to BB devices.

@bwana, lots of apps seem like resource hogs on a BB :D.

BBM is largely the only reason BlackBerry's are still so wildly successful here in South Africa. Most of the market for BB devices is in the youth and low-income market (affluent/well-to-do businessmen are largely moving to Android and iOS devices), where free (or near-free) communications such as BBM will thrive.

Young college/university students have BBM and it's because all their other friends or family have BBM. They're locked into that ecosystem because it's not about whether they have WhatsApp or not, it's because someone in their circle doesn't and they *have* to keep in touch.

What I suspect will happen is that if BBM goes to iOS or Android, it will provide a safe migration path (whether RIM wants it or not) for college/uni students here in ZA to move to other devices. Once that happens I see the BB market share dropping to reflect the US levels.
