I get to renew my cell contract next month. Something that's bothering me though is will the current line of new Blackberry's (Example, 9790 or 9900) be upgradable to this new OS coming out later in the year? Im thinking not... Another 2 year contract for a high end expensive Blackberry phone that won't have the latest OS Updates is quite demoralising...

OS10 or BBX or whateverthehell they're calling it now will not run on current hardware. Fuhgedaboudit.

Get a proper phone...

The problem is I already have Skype, MSN, GoogleChat, WhatsApp, Facebook, MXIT, mIRC, Jabber and BBM. Out of all of these the mayority of my contacts prefer BBM, making the move to a non-bbm phone very difficult. I would prefer a Android phone though...

What price are you willing to pay to have the phone you want and serves you best (price measured in convenience, of course). Some times, sacrifices have to be made....and...do you have to give your current BlackBerry away when you upgrade? I don't know how upgrades work - never done them.

I would buy the Samsung Galaxy Note in a heatbeat if it had bbm :/. And I could keep my old Blackberry running. But carrying 2 phones seems like such a pain just to have bbm :/

Just change already. I know its uncomfortable changing, but it will be better for you in the end.

I'm hoping there will be a BBX variant for these current phones.... the rumors are that there wont. That does suck though.

I am so tired of the Blackberry-bashing going on. Really, what are these people even doing in the Blackberry forum if they hate the phone so much?

The older BB's can never run the newest software, it has been like that for the last few new releases. I have made peace with the fact that I will be carrying two phones with me most of the time. My SGSII for all my normal phone use and my BB 9790 just for BBM.

Que?

My HTC Desire was the first of my phones in a decade that easily saw out its contract term - not one day's hassles. That is of course besides the point, which is that current BB hardware will not run the new OS; it's not a rumour to my knowledge, as RIM has not at any point hinted that they might. The new BBs will be dual-core phones comparable to current higher-mid range 'droids - the old hardware won't cope. And even if they could manage, BB offers no room for modders and developers to create custom software based on newer releases.

As BB5/6 couldn't run BB7, so BB7 phones won't run BB10.

They deserve the bashing they get. They are outdated, archaic crappy phones. As for what I was doing here: I was answering a question. ;)

There have been a few generations where the older phones were able to use the next OS

My 8900 came with OS4 and I upgraded it to 5

I admit that its going to be a very low possibility that they actually do this. On the other hand they have had working versions of BBX for more than a year, they would have been testing it with the 9900 and other phones.

The latest version of IOS runs on most (if not all the iPhones) so this is something that we are expecting to happen with at least some of the newer phones.

Thats quite sad.

No.. whats sad is the previous attempts by HTC and Samsung to make phones.

? I write enterprise software for our phones using BB with Java and eclipse. Same app runs on OS5 to OS7, I'd call that pretty decent cross version development.

Won't happen. If RIM exist long enough to actually roll out BB10 it is going to be on completely new architecture - the old phones will not run the new OS. The Playbook, if I correctly remember what I read, will - the phones will not.

Nah. Like I said, not a day's hassle with my previous HTC. :) But again, this is quite beside the point.

That's not what I'm saying; the same phone will not run OS5 through OS7, nor will any OS5/6/7 phone run OS10 for that matter.

Actually no, you said this

Sure, the current hardware platform won't run the newer version of the OS but thats pretty much any phone across the board, some can go up a version and some can't but to expect a phone to run future full OS updates is like expecting a PC to run future OS's smoothly. You will hit a ceiling where the hardware cannot cope adequately with the software. BBX will be a new platform but I also can't see RIM killing Java as a part of the phone, so there will be backward compatibility in the phone for software and a large base library update but I don't think it will be this huge wall to development.

What I meant was "custom software" as in what WinPhone/Android users would refer to as a custom ROM - I thought it pointless to use the terminology here as BB users would have no fecking clue wat a ROM is. Why the hell would I seek to infer any reference to Java and whatnot? That's wholly not what the thread's about.

I agree its so damn childish. Each to their own is what i say, and if you dont like something keep it to yourself. I love BB and I dont need 1000's of apps and a massive battery hungry screen to keep me happy.

Amen, I have never seen a hateful bunch such as android fans. Everything has to be compared againist android. I am have BB and IOS user.

If you don't like BB, tough, but don't let that stop you from loving your phone. After all its common new os is designed to run on new hardware. There is already plenty android devices which can't run the latest version of android, yet these ppl keep bashing bb.

Well said! Competition is always good, so instead of bashing other, praise your own - then a mod will see what an idiot/troll some are and move their posts to the correct forum...

Back on topic: I have doubt that the current hardware will support the newer OS10, so if you really need to have the newer version, you can extend your contract to a mont-to-mont and upgrade later as you already qualify... I'm looking forward to the new releases BB will have to offer.
