BCX wins Ubuntu contract

I think good for Linux in general but bad for the guys that actually develop and support Ubuntu/Linux. BCX has always been predominantly a M$ shop and has never been known to compete in the linux space, so where this deal comes from I have no idea. SITA are known to have an open source strategy, but I think that they have backed the wrong horse in supplying it to them.

Time will tell I suppose.

Maybe they'll do a trial run, and with the desktops first?

It also is possible that they've contracted somebody else to give their head techies on-site training on How Not To Install Ubuntu and all that fun stuff...

will have to wait and see what happens...

BCX is big. Thats why they got the contract. Not necessarily because they know linux.

Hey, at least they aren't using Windows... now that would have been a disaster.

I'd half expect BCX to install Windows on a VM on top of Ubuntu & declare the project a success.

Since the SITA techies transformed, my wifes computer and everybody around her computers turned into paper weights. No email, not even Intranet. A document takes about 30 mins to open. The network printer is just gone.

I've gone over and killed a few things to get it going again but alas, it only lasts a few days.

So maybe this Linux is a good thing. If they don't know about they will just leave it alone.

The free to use software was developed by Mark Shuttleworth.
Debian developed the software. Mark Shuttleworth and his guys only adapted it / made it more user friendly ;)

Something in that line. We don't argue about Linux though... (except of course in saying it is better than M$. Because it is (but no argument there))

Regardless of who got the contract this is great news for South Africa and the open source community in general. Our company used Ubuntu from the start and it has been a blessing, does everything we need it to do.
