becoming a vet with maths lit - possible?

I would lodge a serious complaint regarding that teacher. Him/her is ruining learners' lives. Almost certainly just because they want to boost their pass mark.

strange you should say that because computers are his first love. apart from passing the CTI test he's visited University of Pretoria and was given a list of IT related fields to choose from. Apparently the consultant was very helpful and he has to choose between hardware, software, programming (which language), a mix of both HW and SW. Truth be told i believe he's so confused about the computer options he needs a while to read through the literature.

Won't get in for any BSc course at UP with maths literacy. How about something like a vet nurse? I think you can do that at TUT but I'm not entirely sure

I worked with a Vet Lab Tech who moved into IT. The reason - her first job was at a company specializing in artificial insemination.
She had the 'wonderful' job of harvesting the material. 6 months later she'd had enough. Switched to computers. 'At least they can't ruin your clothes' - she used to joke. :sick:
 
I notice that none of the top university in the country consider Math Lit in theri APS score calcs, so yeah no chance he can get into anything science related.
 
For programming: it doesn't really matter what language you do. Programming is a way of thinking and solving problems. The language is just the syntax. I would choose either Java or Python if I were in his position. Python is more used in scientific fields and it is a very nice introductory language. Java is by far the most used language on the planet and will suit him better for commercial applications. I started with Java but I far prefer Python as a teaching language.
 
Is he capable of passing proper Maths with any sort of meaningful mark (C or better)? I think we need that answer before throwing the teacher under the bus.

That being said Maths Lit is pretty much a death sentence if you want to study any BSc, though any advice to drop to Math lit when you could probably do alright in normal maths with a huge amount of effort is terrible.

I can also confirm that studying to be a Vet is definitely one of the hardest courses to take at university, judging from what my Vet friends had to deal with.

Lol. I'm from a family of doctors - even they admitted that Veterinary medicine is a tough field.

I just meant nurse, like assistant :) Closest he could get to a vet. I remember my sister looking at doing that cause she had maths lit. so seems like it is possible.

Becoming a vet is probably harder than becoming a Medical Doctor tbh

And you know this how? Don't be so quick to blame the teacher. If there was a chance that he could pass math there is no way they would have recommended he do maths lit. I bet you this kid had a poor mark in maths, mucked around, didn't do his homework but it's all the teachers fault, yeh right.
Regardless though, he can take a gap year, work his butt off in math and apply himself.

They (CTI) want everyone to pass their test to give the applicants false hope so they can scam them out of their money!

Because of how the reasoning was framed. Mathematics and maths lit are not the same subject.

I see you reasoning lived666 but the boy's a hard worker. Having said that i hope it doesn't point to him being useless at maths :(

If that good maths teacher i spoke about gives him one or two private lessons he should be able to assess his abilities. I loved maths at school so it frustrates me to think that somebody doesn't "get it". And it's so important in life.

BTW the advice given in this thread will be invaluable to him should he decide to forget about becoming a vet and pursue computers.

For that I thank you.

P.S. the advice is invaluable for any young person considering a career in computing.
