becoming a vet with maths lit - possible?

A story about myself that I think may be relevant or at least motivational: I was told to drop to SG maths at the start of high school (at the time it would have prevented me from doing a BSc in CS, which is what I really wanted to do), so I changed schools (my super crappy HG marks were almost entirely due to bad teaching). I passed HG maths with an E in matric, which wasn't good enough for me to get into a BSc CS (partly because my earlier experience had made me fall behind, and partly because I was enjoying the social life of my new school a little too much).

So I did most of matric again and got an A (highly motivated this time, since I knew that there was nothing anyone but myself can do to get me in) and then went to university, and got a degree in Maths and CS. I did some postgrad degrees, and have been a very successful software developer ever since.

It's an option tks Wasabee!. His mom took him to Pretoria and they discussed it with a consultant but he felt he'd like face to face lessons so as to ask questions if necessary.

Now that's a story we can all benefit from, very motivational indeed. It just proves that by sticking to your guns and putting in the effort you can accomplish anything.

It must be marvellous to look back and see how you've succeeded. Congrats on rewriting your matric and achieving all you have cguy. Thanks for the post.
 
Send him into the yachting industry, You don't need maths and can easily save R2 million rand (2mil in your bank account) in 5 years. No income tax or living expenses.

The catch? He will WORK HIS TITS OFF. But hey? Something's gotta give. Feel free to PM me if you want to know more.

Do you mean working on a yacht? As crew? Getting to see the world? That's fine if he wants a lot of money in the bank. If it's an option i'll ask him to get in touch.

At this stage all he wants to do is get a degree :D

Thanks. The takeaways that I meant to list are primarily:
- Teachers are way to quick to jump to conclusions about the "limited potential" of students
- Success in Maths is far more about will than any type of genetic "maths mind"
- Doing an extra year of catch up in the scheme of things, is nothing

Quickly before i go ... i agree with points 1 and 3. Sincerely hope you're correct on point 2 .

Yeah, you have inspired me to start a thread on the yachting industry.

I have left the industry to get a degree myself, So to be clear, If he wants a degree then that is a great decision.

FET = N (nated) Mathematics. universities don't accept anythig that has N along side it. wether its N4 or N100 they wont look at u. NSC = university. N4-6 = Technikon
 
Let me help you there. You will never be able to do anything of worth with Maths Lit. If anyone ever tells you they are going to do Maths Lit, punch them in the face and tell them to go think about what they have said.

And do you really want someone working on your account that can barely put 2 and 2 together? If someone doesn't have the skill and discipline to do regular maths, which is also on a very sub standard level now, do you really want them handling your legal affairs?

Sorry but Math Lit = idiot in my books. Maybe you should see the quality (or lack there of) of work they do in Math Lit. You would be horrified and change your tune very quickly. People who do this are the brain dead mouth breathers of the world that require someone to constantly wipe the dribble from their chin.

This is a poor excuse of a subject just to make it look like the idiots that the ANC are churning out did some type of "Math" when in reality all the "learners" are doing is counting to potato.

For the record I have genuine math, but I don't think you have actually seen math lit... I have highly highly successful acquaintance who only has math lit, but earns more than most of us combined.

Just saying....

The papers get posted here quite regularly. I'm very much inclined to agree with vamp...I was shocked. Those grade 12 papers looked more like grade 6..ok...8 maybe...papers to me.

As you say there are some that still make it big...thats hardly relevant *any* qualification including zero schooling will have some examples of people that made it big. Hell look at our prez.

Wow, my uncle dropped out of school and he's a millionaire. Woop dee doo. The fact of the matter is varsities don't want idiots studying technically challenging degrees when they can't even do functional maths. I never said you are doing maths lit I just explained how brain dead you have to be to be taking it. And yes, I have actually seen the math lit test papers lately and "which stage on this load shedding diagram would you rather be in during x month so that you have the least amount of power outages" on matric level is not what I would call advanced - that's grade 3 level work right there.
