BEE

South Africa will never be truly competitive on a global stage if things like BEE are continually forced on businesses dictating how and by who they should be run.

People should be allowed freedom to run their business as they see fit and employ who they like. Also, putting someone in a position based on their skin colour instead of their qualifications or suitability to the job is plain WRONG and to the people that can't see that, it's pointless even trying to explain.

America has AA on a high scale, and it's also seeing it's ass.

BEE, a way to redress the injustices of the past, also to achieve economic emancipation.:)

It is hardly surprising that someone as ignorant as you would extol the virtues of BEE without considering the costs.

My sis lives in Melbourne ... it isn't cheap, but it isn't that expensive. A lot of stuff is cheaper than here though if you know where to look.
My mom found a Puma factory shop that the most expensive shoe is $50 :p ... I took my $30 shoes to Sandton, and the store there said they could get the same pair for about R1000.

Supermarkets are about the same price, maybe a bit more ... you don't necessarily need a car due to great transport, so you can save on car costs.

Thanks for the info. :)

BEE has worked well to make a small minority of previously disadvantaged people wealthy. There seems to be very little middle ground; either you live in a shack or you have a good paying BEE position and drive a 5 series. I dont care if I apply for a job and a black person gets the position, so long as he/she is better suited and better qualified for it. Dont give me a job because im white, or because someone else is black.

Ive used the pendulum analogy for a while, and it seems to hold for most things. Pull the pendulum all the way to one side (white), let it go, and it swings nearly all the way to the other. I have seen evidence of this in books: in the past, an author would always use 'he' when referring to person, while this has mostly changed to 'he/she'. I have noticed that several books use 'she' instead of 'he'. I know this may seem petty, but is it right to always have the pendulum swing all the way to the opposite side? Isnt this memerly repeating the mistakes of the past but with different classes of individual?

No longer a free economy. Next is land, Firearms have already happened. Wonder what is next after land.....Seems there is a great plan for us all.

As an economy, SA is pretty free. Helluva lot better than 20-30 years ago, anyway, and better than many other first world countries in some respects.

It has been passed as law in that particular sector. Does not matter about the 5mil. He does not deal with anyone who requires bee however gvt have passed the law that says so. Diamond Industry, but as I said he does not deal with GVT or De Beers or anyone who requires BEE.,

Dude, I can undestand that you are upset, however if he is in mining, then he has to comply with the respective sector charter, in this case the mining charter, which was thought up by mining companies themselves, to not comply with the FULL BEE codes of good practice. And IIRC their target was set at 25%.

Your Dad seems to be a victim of bigger mining companies commiting him to something that he did not have a say in. So your frustrations should be aimed at both parties, IMO.

He might not deal with GVT, but he does need a licence from them IIRC.

The company I work for offers consulting services in mining and many other engineering fields. We have a joint venture with another company that offers services in mining (instrumentation and support testing). Both companies have no BEE. We get supplier questionnaires from procurement departments and we fill in all information required by the scorecard including our training targets. Nobody has forced us to sell anything.

We would sell a stake to another investor (incl BEE) if we felt we could leverage that relationship to make more money and/or to be sustainable!

Even if it is mostly true, ALL people should be judged person to person, and not based on what ancestors have done, or on what scientific studies says, which is never true for everyone.

SM, thanks for replying in sensible unemotive manner.

The biggest "curveball" in the case of AA/BEE is that the vast majority of skill lay in the hands of whites. Ninety percent of professionals in SA presently are white. This is historical and no amount of complaining on the part of the govt will change that.

Add that statistic to the fact that there is a worldwide shortage of engineers and the result will be that those skills will emigrate, leaving SA in a pickle with detiroating infrastructure. Sound familiar?

Please stick to the topic, and stop promoting your ignorant, waste of bandwidth videos. You need to get a life.

He is sticking to the topic ... he is giving his opinion just like everyone else here. Everyone is entitled to their opinion (admittedly I haven't had the time yet to watch to video, but will do this evening). You are the only one that needs to get a life as you have no right to tell others to not give their opinion. You first need to write something sensible before you can tell others their opinion is not.

They don't HAVE to. But if their competitors are doing it, then they are going to be left behind.
