Ben Kelly's tips for Pinky: how to fix Telkom

Next thing Pinky will invite Ben Kelly for coffee and we will have to read an article about what a great job Telkom is doing and how we should be appreciative of what (little) telkom is doing for its customers.

...for more than 10 years the company has been giving the shareholders exactly what they wanted while completely ignoring what the customers wanted.

This is what tends to happen when Government owns 39,8% of the shares.

That is really an article with great detail. An immense amount of thought must have gone into it. I am happy to see that Ms Moholi gets such wonderful contributions.

Some good points in the article, but do you think Pinky can even manage to turn on the computer and navigate to MyBB? (Because if so she's already better than the previous CEO's)

Or is that more the Brain's department? :D

She needs to use the secret too. Telkom WILL do something useful!

Too bad it's probably going to be business as usual until the next change in leadership.

Was it coincidence that right next to this headline (Ben Kelly's tips for Pinky: how to fix Telkom was this headline "Top telecoms jobs still open".

Maybe Ben can have a go at Telkom after Pinky had a turn.

Number 1 idea to fix Telkom from my side: Stop treating ADSL ISP's as competitors and rather treat them as an alternative retail channel. Let them resell EVERYTHING Telkom has to offer. So while the voice line might be forced on us when you buy ADSL, to buy that inclusive of your ADSL package from an ISP will probably be an easier sell. Although the cell phone service providers did became a headache to the mobile operators later on they helped significantly in selling cell phones to the masses in the beginning. Telkom needs the current ISPs to go push Telkom products hard - 8ta, landline, Wifi, diginet, ADSL etc.

Before I get flamed - just because I think this is a good idea from a business side, it does not mean I like Telkom :-)

Telkom really has a tough time selling their products. Even their ads are bad - I saw one in the Sunday newspaper which advertise their wonderful integrated office solutions, and they listed 5 different packages with prices but here is the kicker - nowhere in the ad does it describe WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS, or what the difference between the packages can possibly be.

Ben Kelly left out the most important thing: Value-for-money. Provide a great product at a price that the average person can afford and Telkom's future would be assured with a huge surge in demand.

At present the basic monthly cost of ADSL before one single megabyte is transmitted is a national disgrace.

Telkom will do nothing until they have to, they already know what they should do, they simply have no real reason or push to do it, they run SA, they set the prices and they eat the bonuses.

This is what it means to Rule over people.

Its too easy to criticize as its mostly all true about Telkom! ... So I say, give her a chance, and lets see where this goes!

off topic: Ben Kelly, nice beard, whiskers needs a trim tho... Cream? :D

Point 3 (reconnecting all those affected by cable theft) should be point 1, imho. Could be broadened: improve the last-mile copper network in general. If they can offer a good reliable service, they'll have a good number of customers and thus make a profit eventually. It's not all about pleasing shareholders in the short-term, they need to be patient and build a proper company that serves its purpose as it's supposed to - once that happens, the shareholders will be happy with the result.

I'm quietly confident that Ms Moholi is going to kick some ass.

I called their helpline today to find how much longer my ADSL installation will take, while waiting for an operator, they advertised that you can now get 4gbps ADSL. Pinky is a god.

Nothing will change for our benefit as long as government has a controlling stake (and this statement doesn't only apply to SA telecoms)
