Bafana's forthright Brazilian physical trainer, Francisco Gonzalez, declared in an interview with Rio de Janeiro newspaper O Globo over the weekend that the controversial McCarthy was still "too fat" in spite of his inclusion in a 29-man provisional World Cup squad.

McCarthy, who has not played a single complete first-team match since joining West Ham United from Blackburn Rovers more than three-and-a-half months ago, will seemingly have to improve his physical condition dramatically in order to gain a valid place in Parreira's finalised 23-player World Cup squad - which is due to be announced in two weeks.

"We will offer him all the support we can to get him into suitable shape," said Gonzalez, "but ultimately it will be up to him to make a supreme effort because currently his body fat is too high.

"His physical state is inferior to the other players," added Gonzalez, "and that is not good.

"Will he be fit enough to be chosen in two weeks time? Only the coach can give you the answer."

But Gonzalez did not mince his words. "To play in a World Cup you have to be in physically top condition," he said. "Benni McCarthy at this time is not in that condition."

"He has to help us help him," added the Bafana trainer. "We are only going to launch his preparation. From then on it will be up to him."

How does a professional ball player get this fat during the year of the WC on home soil? I think he doesn't care...else he could have laid off the junk food and maybe trained by himself if he wasn't playing regularly at West Ham.

It's very said because he is one of our best hopes of getting goals...he sure can stick them away (I mean goals, not burgers and chips :p).

Can you imagine him taking his shirt off after scoring a goal? :D

He's made his money and thats all that matters to him, he's lazy.. Benni is the poster kid for everything thats wrong with SA footballers

Nomvete is the man for SA. Watch him! He is looking good so far.

Rofl and @ Blackburn he publicly declared that he ain't going to train/run etc... this guy is a lost cause, he shouldn't even be mentioned in the 29 man squad!

/thinking about our strikers.

Why whenever they have the ball way outside the box they feel they need to shoot? Its like when they get over the half way line, they lookup and see the posts and let one RIP only for the ball to land in the stands.

More trouble ahead for Benni

There's more trouble ahead for Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy.

The West Ham United striker is already in danger of missing out on the Bafana Bafana squad to play in the World Cup and now it has been revealed that his English Premiership side intend to take severe action against the Capetonian unless he loses weight.

According to the English newspaper The Mirror if McCarthy returns to the Hammers' Upton Park headquarters carrying excess kilograms, the club will take disciplinary action against him.

Co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold are fuming at the 32- year-old striker and intend to impose the maximum possible fine on him if he fails to address his weight problem.

McCarthy piled on the kilograms and played just two-and-half games for the Hammers following his R22m move from Blackburn Rovers in January.

McCarthy failed to find the net as the Hammers battled for Premiership survival. An Upton Park insider has revealed that McCarthy's body mass index hit 24.2, a high level for an outfield player.

The West Ham source, according to a report published in the Daily Dispatch today, said: "McCarthy will be in deep trouble if he comes back to the club in the state he left. While Gianfranco Zola was here he took advantage of the situation. But David Sullivan and David Gold will intervene now the Italian has left.

It is estimated that it has cost West Ham a total of ÂŁ8.5million (about R90-million) to sign McCarthy including the transfer fee to Blackburn and his wages."

Benni earns around R550 000 a week including image rights.

Sullivan, in particular, is unhappy after it was claimed that he was personally responsible for signing McCarthy.

Both Sullivan and Gold questioned the purchase of a striker whose fitness had been questioned by Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce, but Zola, the West Ham boss at the time, claimed it was vital for the club to sign McCarthy. Zola believed McCarthy would deliver the goals to ensure West Ham stayed up.

Allardyce slammed McCarthy in the countdown to his Ewood Park exit. The former Ajax Amsterdam and FC Porto marksman was fined twice for failing to meet weight targets. Allardyce ordered McCarthy to report at 07h00 for extra training.

McCarthy refused and that proved to be the breaking point for Bafana's all-time top goalscorer. McCarthy said at the time: "That's the last straw. Enough is enough. I feel I've been stepped on too much and it's best that I go."

I wish I could earn R550 000 a year for being lazy and fat...:D

Edit. Sorry per week!!!

When Benni plays for SA, he is the most selfish and ignorant player.
This was after he made a name for himself at Porto...
He had a god-complex, but yet we can all see he is a slimy weasel.
Get rid of the fat slob.

his condition is shocking...maybe if they put big macs in the goals he will score a goal...he must have had fish and chips everyday..

Mphela,Parker,Nomvete.... sadly this is our fire upfront. I think if Benni can work his ass off like never before it would be alright to include him JUST for the experience threat.

We have no DEADLY DEADLY striker :( Pienaar, Dikcagoi and Modise WILL have to score at some point in this world cup.

Yea agreed, despite his fat ass, Benni has confidence and is the most clinical finisher SA has

Hahaha! Good one.

How is he supposed to get fit and thin in +-20 days?

Stop eating McDonald's buuuuurger and start double session training @ 7am

Two of the things he publically declared he WILL REFUSE TO DO whilst he was at Blackburn

Apparently he has granted the media an interview so the story will unfold cause according to him he is fit, in a professional outfit Francisco Gonzalez should not be making such comments. Lets hope he did not munch Burger King.
