New Bentayga console compartment has biometric lock

It’s a bit of a gimmick, we admit, but it is a much more secure way of storing your valuables in your car.

Bentley’s Mulliner bespoke division has come up with an lockable stowage compartment for the centre console of the Bentayga SUV that’s unlocked, not by a key but by your fingerprint.

The high-pressure die-cast aluminium box has a concealed lock with a capacitive fingerprint sensor - very similar to the ones used in some smartphones. It can also store multiple fingerprints, so you can control who has access to the locker.

Inside the locker are two USB ports and an auxiliary socket, so you can charge your devices and even access what’s in them while they’re securely stored, and it’s the perfect place to leave valuables such as your phone, house keys and watch while you’re enjoying yourself on the beach or hiking trail.

Even if the resort has valet parking and its staff have access to your Bentayga, they won’t have access to its lock-box.

Here’s how much the Bentley Bentayga Mulliner costs in SA

In March 2017, Bentley took the wraps off its Bentayga Mulliner, describing the fresh flagship as “the ultimate luxury SUV”. And now this model has finally arrived in South Africa, likely in very limited numbers.

How much will one set you back? Well, you’re looking at a starting price of R5 795 000, which is some R1 808 000 more expensive than the W12 on which it is based. Before, of course, you add your choice of optional extras…

What do you get for the added outlay? Well, there’s the two-tone paintwork, model-specific seven-spoke 22-inch alloys (with floating wheel centres), special exterior badging, body-coloured lower elements and chromed lower bumper grilles.

But it’s the cabin that truly sets the Mulliner-badged model apart. The front and rear seats are finished in different hide colours (and offered in seven suggested combinations), complete with Mulliner embroidery and contrast stitching, and there’s a Mulliner Bottle Cooler in the rear of the cabin, featuring an illuminated chilling cabinet and bespoke Cumbria Crystal flutes.

Ombré Burr Walnut Veneer is also offered, along with mood lighting, illuminated Mulliner tread-plates and Bentley LED “welcome lamps”. In addition, Bentley says the “Naim for Bentley Audio” system is the most powerful in its class, featuring twenty speakers driven by a 1 950-watt, 21-channel amplifier.

Meanwhile, a remote-controlled heater function allows the cabin to be heated or cooled when the engine is switched off, while electric rear window blinds and a double sun-visor are also available. Then there’s the optional “Linley Hamper by Mulliner”, which includes a refrigerator, bespoke fine china cutlery, crockery and crystal glass, and a storage area for dry goods.

The bespoke mechanical “Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling” clock features 196 individual pieces and is automatically wound periodically by a dedicated high-precision winding mechanism within the car. It is machined in solid gold (customers can select from yellow, white or rose gold), with the choice of either a mother-of-pearl or black ebony face and decorated with eight diamond indexes.

Of course, the Bentayga Mulliner is powered by Bentley’s 6,0-litre W12 engine, producing 447 kW and 900 N.m to facilitate a claimed zero to 100 km/h time of 4,1 seconds and a top speed of 301 km/h.

While the figures seem low when you first look at it, you need to consider the price tag attached to these cars. Take the Bentayga for example.

The standard Bentayga is valued at around R2 950 000 while the flagship version goes for a whopping R3 987 000.

Other models like the Mulsanne, Continental and Flying Spur are valued above the R3 million mark.

Bentley ‘Bentayga Sport’ Coupe Could Be Coming Next Year

There seems to be a market for absolutely everything these days and for those who want the expensive luxurious Bentayga from Bentley but don’t need it to be so practical, it seems you only have to wait until next year.

Whether you like it or not, the Coupe-SUV is here to stay and after Audi revealed their Q8 it seems another rich member of the Volkswagen Group is getting ready to come out with its own niche model that attempts to combine two very different body styles.

According to a recent report from Auto Bild, Bentley will extend the Bentayga family to include a second member tentatively called “Bentayga Sport” as early as next year.

It is expected to be sleeker, sportier and more agile than the regular model which likely means a a coupe-like sloping roofline that will surely eat into the available headroom for rear passengers.

With the introduction of the Bentayga Sport next year, we will get a preview of what’s to come in terms of a mid-cycle facelift for the standard version.

As a reminder the manufacturer has already confirmed a Bentayga Speed is on the way which could actually be this talked about model. It is possible the Bentayga Speed will adopt a coupe-infused design while packing more punch from its massive W12 engine.

Bentley Bentayga Pikes Peak launched to celebrate record run

Ten examples of special-edition Bentayga arrive as nod to hill climb success at the weekend

Bentley will produce 10 special-edition versions of the Bentayga to celebrate its record time for a production SUV at the weekend’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Following Rhys Millen’s 10min 49.9sec run in an almost completely standard Bentayga (it featured minimal modifications for safety), Bentley will offer W12 versions of its luxury SUV with bespoke features inspired by that car.

Finished by Mulliner, Bentley’s in-house coachbuilding service, the Pikes Peak model comes in either Beluga black or Radium. It sits on 22in wheels, finished with a bespoke two-tone design of the two aforementioned shades.

Bentley’s Black Specification pack is added as standard, replacing all exterior chrome with gloss black. It also adds a carbonfibre splitter, side skirts and diffuser, while a rear spoiler is crafted from the same material.

Drawing links to the weekend’s result is a Pikes Peak motif that sits on the front wheel arches.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed with Beluga leather, featuring Alcantara inserts and contrasting lime accents. The steering wheel and gearlever are also trimmed in Alcantara, while the headlining is made with Eliade cloth. The car gets a Pikes Peak logo on its carbonfibre fascia and numbered treadplates.

Like the car that took to the iconic hill, no changes have been made to the W12 engine. It produces 600bhp and 664lb ft of torque, and drives all four wheels via a ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. The Bentayga Sports Exhaust and Touring Specification pack are fitted as standard.

Although Bentley won’t announce pricing until the car goes on sale in Europe and the US in August, it’s fair to assume a hefty increase on the standard W12 car’s £162,700.

Bentley Bentayga Diesel (2018) Launch Review

The local introduction of the R2.95-million Bentley Bentayga Diesel took place in the Cape Winelands recently and we savoured our first opportunity to drive the British first-class SUV on home soil.

First-class SUVs. Forget for a minute about Q7s, GLEs, X5s, F-Paces, Range Rover Sports, XC90s, Touaregs, Cayennes and other large luxury off-roaders you've spotted on our roads. Sometimes they’re inelegantly parked up on kerbs, other times they swarm around private schools and swish shopping malls or, perhaps to your chagrin, they're clad in black, adorned with blue lights and wilfully speed past you in traffic. Forget too about the off-roading behemoths that have been glammed up, such as the Land Cruiser 200, Lexus LX570, Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Nissan Patrol.

The most impressive aspect of the Bentayga's rear aspect must be its beautifully-fluted dual exhaust ends.

Vehicles such as the Range Rover, Lamborghini Urus, Rolls-Royce Cullinan and, yes, Bentley Bentayga fall into a loftier category: First-Class SUVs. Maserati’s Levante sits on the fringe, the flagship new G-Class may well earn its place in the group and Aston Martin and Ferrari will soon get their 20-inch wheels wet (but not too wet, for heaven’s sake, man) in this segment. These vehicles are worth comfortably as much as 2, 3 or more of the aforementioned, forgive us, cooking-variety premium SUVs, despite the fact that they are not fundamentally better at being hopped-up luxury cars.

Better than the sum of its parts?

All of which suggests that one cannot apply conventional criteria to appraise vehicles in the First-Class SUV league, because if you did, they’d be preposterously overpriced and not worthy of further consideration. No, a First Class SUV needs to be impressive in the most literal sense of the word; it has to embody and express a sense of rarefied luxury, the kind of exclusivity only reserved for people for whom spending money is a trifling object. It’s a hackneyed expression, but oh-so-darn appropriate in this case: “above all, it must seem decidedly better than the sum of its parts.

This particular launch unit, photographed on a wine farm outside Stellenbosch, came equipped with Blackline specification.

It is with that in mind that we won’t expend too many characters expounding the Bentayga’s controversial looks. Kudos to Bentley for endowing its SUV with familial design elements; it's instantly recognisable as a product of Crewe, but even though it looks better in the metal than in photographs, its exterior execution is a somewhat hit-and-miss affair, the rear aspect, for example, is regrettably generic. The most neutral thing one could say is that the Bentley looks very expensive, which, given its base price of R2.95-million, is wholly appropriate and probably all that matters in this case.

It gets better, however. The largely-aluminium-panelled Bentayga is based on the Volkswagen Group’s MLB platform and therefore shares its architecture and general packaging with well-known German premium SUVs – it’s a characteristic that has a genuine mechanical benefit, but more about that later. Apart from some familiar-looking minor controls (such as the steering wheel buttons), however, the Bentayga’s interior looks bespoke, utterly sumptuous, painstakingly detailed and, suffice to say, warmly inviting.

Expansive, yet intricately fashioned wood veneer is complemented by quilted leather trim in the Bentayga's exquisite cabin.

Opulent accommodation

There are swathes of supple hand-stitched leather, expanses of polished wood veneers with profound natural patterning, chrome-finished organ-stop ventilation controls and rotatable half-spherical outlets… crikey, even the infotainment system, although evidently derived from a VW-family-shared unit, has a sophisticated “Bentley font” and distinctive menu system. The raised driver’s seat is so instantly cossetting that one feels that adjusting the captain's chair in any directions apart from fore and aft would be a crude insult to the diesel Bentley’s tender sensibilities. Similarly, the transmission lever and centre console-mounted drive-mode roundel are beautifully weighted and exquisite in their simple elegance.

Meanwhile, at the heart of the Bentayga is a 4.0-litre tri-turbodiesel (2 exhaust-driven turbochargers and one electrically-powered one, courtesy of the integral 48V electrical system) that produces peak outputs of 320 kW and 900 Nm, the latter of which is available from 1 000 to 3250 rpm. Peak numbers of interest are 0-100 kph in 4.8 secs, a 270-kph top speed and, astonishingly, a claimed consumption figure of 8.0 L/100 km.

With the full wallop of torque (900 Nm) available as low as 1 000 rpm, the Bentayga lacks little in terms of overtaking shove.

The motor is characterised by supreme refinement, comparatively eager throttle responses, and, as the figures attest, a wallop of pace that presents itself with but a polite prod of the metal-trimmed accelerator pedal. So much effort was ostensibly devoted to damping the motor’s diesel chatter that you’re only really aware of it while standing in close proximity to the vehicle when it’s idling.

Moreover, it’s not so much the effortlessness of the sophisticated Volkswagen Group turbodiesel motor’s performance (it often threatens to steal the show entirely!) and the unobtrusive shifts of the velvety 8-speed automatic transmission that denote this Bentayga as a respect-worthy member of the “Winged B” family… The newcomer’s on-road demeanour also positively exudes a reassuring “Bentleyness”…

The Dynamic Drive active damping system endows the Bentley with a largely unflappable ride quality.

In other words, whether you’re trundling through a quaint rural town, striving down a freeway or ushering the 2.5-tonne British juggernaut over a serpentine mountain pass, it remains poised and well composed as it carries momentum. The ride quality is pliant, yes, but there is nothing ponderous about the way the SUV responds to swift, eager steering inputs. When the Bentayga thrusts forward or is made to brake purposefully, there is no uncouth pitching motion; if you corner quickly, a hint of lean/yaw, and (perhaps) a tyre chirrup, are all you’re likely to experience.

Specify it to your heart's content

The Bentayga Diesel is not a sports first-class SUV per se; this model is available in W12 and V8 petrol derivatives (the latter overseas) for those who require more urgency, but it arguably offers the best blend of performance and efficiency in the range. Given the prestige of the Bentley badge, its asking price of R2.95-million does not seem that stratospheric (considering that a comparable Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 costs R2.74-million), but then consider that some features that would be standard on some premium SUVs, let alone first-class cars, still need to be added.

A rear-seat entertainment system is available and the aft climate control console is operated by a touchscreen.

The Dynamic Ride active anti-roll bar system, which facilitates the Bentayga’s superb body control, is an extra-cost option, as are adaptive (radar-guided) cruise control, head-up display, infrared night vision, lane- and traffic assist systems and other safety/driver convenience equipment, including top-view cameras and automatic parking function.

Having said that, volume-selling premium marques cannot offer buyers the opportunity to personalise their cars in the way that Bentley and a few other exclusive car brands do. The Bentayga can be configured as a 4-, 5- or 7 seater; there are 15 standard colours for the leather trim and carpets and you can choose between 5 standard colour splits (or specify a dual-tone colour split) and match the luggage bay's trim hue, if you’d like. A selection of wood veneers is available, as are a variety of stitching and embroidering options and numerous bespoke fittings and accessories.

The Bentayga occupies a tiny place in the market, yet Bentley's first turbodiesel derivative nonetheless does its maker proud.

Summary

At almost R700k less than the most affordable Flying Spur sedan, the Bentayga Diesel has quietly become the new entry point to the Bentley brand in the South African market. Whether it has enough kerb- and road presence to appeal to the exotic tastes of the well-heeled, who’d otherwise buy mid to high-end Range Rovers to complement the first-class saloons and supercars that they already have in their garages, is a moot point: only the opinions of those who can afford one really matter. The Bentayga does have its shortcomings, principal of which is a lengthy options list and less than generous rear legroom, come to think of it, but it does not feel like a badge-engineered Bentley, at least not obviously so. In a sliver of the new car market where Range Rovers and Levantes end and Rolls-Royce (and whichever exotic brands will follow) begin, it does have its place...

Bentley Bentayga Diesel dropped in Europe

Falling demand and increasing anti-diesel attitudes have led to the brand to withdraw its only diesel model in Europe

Bentley’s first diesel car, the V8 diesel-engined version of the Bentayga, will also be its last offered in Europe.

The Bentayga Diesel, first introduced in late 2016, has been pulled from sale in Europe, including the UK, although it remains available in thirteen markets global markets, including Australia, Russia and South Africa.

Bentley issued the following statement: “Over recent months, the political legislative conditions have changed in Europe, and a significant shift in attitude towards diesel-powered cars has been widely documented.

“These factors, alongside the recent introduction of the new Bentayga V8 and our strategic decision to focus on electrification in the future, have led to us taking the decision to offer only petrol Bentayga derivatives in European markets from September 2018.”

Although the Bentayga going petrol-only will have a negligible impact on overall UK diesel registrations, it's part of a wider shunning of diesels by the British public, which has forced manufacturers to trim numerous models from their line-ups.

So far in 2019, diesel has made up less than a third of total new car registrations, whereas it made up almost 50% in 2015.

Bentley wouldn’t specify what proportion of Bentayga sales the diesel had been taking, but alongside three powertrains (W12, V8 and V6 plug-in hybrid), it was likely to be a niche offering, particularly in the petrol-favouring super-luxury segment.

Until the end of the second quarter of 2018, there were 815 W12, 518 diesel and 115 V8 Bentaygas registered on UK roads, although the W12 was introduced first, the diesel in late 2016 and the V8 petrol and V6 plug-in hybrid earlier this year.

Bentley has confirmed that UK customers will no longer be able to order a Bentayga Diesel, even as a one-off.

New WLTP test procedure ‘close to catastrophic’ for Bentley

Bentley’s CEO says the implementation of the new Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP) in Europe caused “close to catastrophic” delays for the British firm.

Speaking to Automotive News Europe, Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark admitted the brand – which is part of the Volkswagen Group – took too long to ready its vehicles for the new testing procedure, which was introduced in Europe at the start of September.

“We were not quick enough unfortunately to book capacity or prioritise our derivatives within some of the group processes to get them certified on time,” Hallmark said, explaining that Bentley’s vehicles became “stuck in the queue”.

This, he added, forced Bentley to delay the planned launch of a plug-in hybrid version of the Bentayga until the first quarter of 2019. Hallmark suggested the testing delays likely cost the brand up to 400 Bentayga sales.

“There has not been capacity around Europe to test all the derivatives so we have had to be ruthless in that prioritisation,” Hallmark said.

The report said the Crewe-based automaker had lost some €137-million in the first nine months of 2018, although Hallmark was confident the firm would return a profit in 2019.

“This year is a conversion year to a better business model and next year you will start to see significant growth and a return to normality in terms of profit,” he predicted.

Bentley powers up Bentayga for flagship Speed model

650bhp 6.0-litre W12-powered Lamborghini Urus rival will be unveiled in the first half of this year

Bentley will crown its Bentayga range with a flagship Speed version later this year, aiming to deliver the ultimate balance of performance and luxury in an SUV package.

Set to be unveiled in the first half of this year and go on sale soon after, the Bentayga Speed will adopt the firm’s twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 petrol engine. A mixture of hardware and software changes will boost torque and power from 600bhp to 650bhp.

Autocar understands that will translate to a top speed of 190mph and a sub-four-second 0-62mph sprint time. This will be achieved not only through more power but expected revisions to the car’s eight-speed automatic gearbox. For comparison, the 631bhp Lamborghini Urus – with which the Bentayga shares much of its underpinnings – tops out at 189mph and is capable of 0-60mph in 3.6sec.

The Speed’s focus won’t just be on beating its Italian sibling on the straights, however. There will be revisions to the standard Bentayga’s chassis to give the SUV more of a performance character, without impacting negatively on comfort levels. There won’t be a reduction in mass: a kerb weight nearly identical to the existing W12’s 2.44 tonnes is likely.

That’s because Bentley is targeting the Speed as the pinnacle of the Bentayga range in every sense. As such, expect interior trim and upholstery enhancements bespoke to the Speed, while subtle exterior design upgrades in line with the previous Continental GT Speed will feature.

In terms of pricing, Autocar anticipates the Bentayga following the cost structure of previous Speed models. The car’s £165,000 price tag will therefore be boosted to around £185,000, before customers have entertained Bentley’s vast array of options and customisation choices.

Following the launch of the Speed, the long-awaited Bentayga plug-in hybrid variant will finally go on sale with deliveries commencing in October.

The production car was unveiled at the 2018 Geneva motor show, but delays caused by WLTP testing capacity have pushed the launch back a year later than expected. The Bentayga Hybrid uses an electric motor mated to a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine, shared with the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.

Bentley Motors is announced full details of the world's fastest production SUV. The Bentley Bentayga Speed features an enhanced 635 PS (626 bhp) version of the renowned 6.0-litre W12 engine that delivers a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds.

Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Great Britain, the Bentayga Speed is the most powerful and performance-oriented Bentayga to date. It builds on a long tradition of Speed models that was born with the Continental GT in 2007 and pushes the boundaries of Bentayga performance further since claiming the production SUV record at the gruelling 2018 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

With a top speed of 190 mph, the Bentley Bentayga Speed is our most powerful and performance-oriented variant to date.

To match the elevated levels of performance, the Bentayga Speed sports a purposeful exterior look. Dark-tint headlights, body-coloured side skirts and a striking tailgate spoiler hint at the SUV's performance credentials. Dark-tint radiator and bumper grilles, a unique 22-inch wheel design available in three finishes and Speed signature badging add to the sporting design cues.

Inside, the Bentley Bentayga Speed introduces a dramatic design theme. This includes elegantly crafted 'swooshes' around the door and door grab, on the edge of the seat cushions and backrest bolsters, and on the lower console; a new contrast stitching on the diamond quilting; discreet Speed badging; a Speed illuminated treadplate signature; and the use of Alcantara materials for the first time in a Bentayga.

As with all Bentaygas, the all-wheel-drive Speed is equipped with Electronic Differential Lock and up to eight Drive Dynamics modes. Bespoke engineering revisions to the Sport mode provide a more dynamic drive, while a greater exhaust character and firmer suspension tune further increase driver engagement.

Customers can personalise the Bentayga Speed to their own requirements with a range of exclusive options. Among them are carbon ceramic brakes, 22-way adjustable front seats with massage function, carbon fibre fascia panels, Bentley rear-seat entertainment (RSE) and mood lighting.

Bentayga Speed - The Pinnacle of SUV Luxury and Performance

The new model takes the Bentayga's extraordinary abilities to new levels, boosting maximum power from 608 PS in the existing 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged model to 635 PS (626 bhp) in the new Speed. Effortless acceleration is delivered thanks to 900 Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque.

A greater exhaust character during start up and gear downshifts combines with a firmer suspension set-up to further enhance the driver experience. The Bentayga's permanent all-wheel drive offers class-leading handling and go-anywhere ability, while powerful ceramic brakes are also an option.
The Bentley Bentayga Speed's ceramic brakes are the largest and most powerful ever fitted to a Bentley, with a maximum braking toque of 6,000 Nm and engineered to withstand temperatures up to 1,000 °C. They also save more than 20 kg over iron brakes.

Bentley Bentayga Speed Is The Fastest Production SUV In The World

Just like that Bentley reveal the Bentayga Speed by telling everyone that it has become the fastest production SUV in the world.

It recorded a top speed of 306 km/h (190 mph) which makes it 0.8 km/h (0.5 mph) faster than the Lamborghini Urus.

The Speed, which will make its debut at Geneva motor show in March, uses a more highly tuned version of the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine as the standard Bentayga, raising power to 626 hp (467 kW) with torque remaining the same at 900 Nm.

Sport mode in the Bentayga Speed has received engineering tweaks intended to provide a more dynamic drive. The mode has been recalibrated to “enhance response” from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic gearbox, as well as the suspension and Bentley Dynamic Ride, the firm’s electric active roll control technology.

There is also a louder exhaust note and firmer suspension to “further increase driver engagement”, said Bentley.

Design changes include dark-tinted headlights, body-coloured side skirts and a prominent tailgate spoiler. The Speed also features dark-tinted front air intake grilles and 22″ alloy wheels, available in a choice of three finishes.

Inside, the Speed gets new contrast stitching, Speed badging, an illuminated ‘Speed’ tread plate and, for the first time in a Bentayga, Alcantara upholstery.

Exclusive options include carbon-ceramic brakes, 22-way adjustable front seats and mood lighting.

According to Bentley South Africa it will arrive towards the end of the 3rd quarter with pricing announced closer to the time.
