Bentley Bentayga

Bentley Bentayga Speed is world’s fastest SUV

Performance SUV’s claimed top speed is fractionally higher than that of its Lamborghini Urus rival

The Bentley Bentayga Speed has set a record as the world’s fastest SUV, beating the Lamborghini Urus’s top speed by just 0.5mph.

The Bentayga Speed, the performance variant of the Crewe-based firm’s luxury SUV, has a claimed top speed of 190mph, while the Urus’s figure is 189.5mph. However, the Urus achieves the 0-62mph sprint in 3.6sec, while the Speed takes 3.9sec.

The Speed, which will make its debut at Geneva motor show in March, uses a more highly tuned version of the same twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre W12 engine as the standard Bentayga, raising power from 600bhp to 626bhp. Torque remains the same at 664lb ft.

Compared with the standard W12 Bentayga, the Speed is 0.2sec faster from 0-62mph, while its top speed is 3mph higher.

Sport mode, one of four on-road driving modes, has received engineering tweaks in the Speed, intended to provide a more dynamic drive. The mode has been recalibrated to “enhance response” from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic gearbox, as well as the suspension and Bentley Dynamic Ride, the firm’s electric active roll control technology.

There is also a louder exhaust note and firmer suspension to “further increase driver engagement”, said Bentley.

Design changes include dark-tinted headlights, body-coloured side skirts and a prominent tailgate spoiler. The Speed also features dark-tinted front air intake grilles and 22in alloy wheels, available in a choice of three finishes.

Inside, the Speed gets new contrast stitching, Speed badging, an illuminated 'Speed' treadplate and, for the first time in a Bentayga, Alcantara upholstery.

Exclusive options include carbon-ceramic brakes, 22-way adjustable front seats and mood lighting.

The Bentayga Speed, which was first scooped by Autocar in June last year, will go on sale this summer and cost around £185,000 – £20,000 more than the regular W12.

It is the latest in a succession of Speed variants of Bentley models, dating back to 2007. The unveiling of the Bentyga Speed comes in the wake of the car maker claiming the production SUV record at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in the US last year.

It is the fourth Bentayga variant to go on sale, following the diesel, V8 and W12. The Bentayga plug-in hybrid, revealed at last year’s Geneva show, is yet to go on sale due to delays caused by WLTP fuel economy testing.

Sorry, Urus: Bentley Bentayga Speed is world’s fastest SUV

Bentley has revealed its new 306 km/h Bentayga Speed, billing it as the world’s fastest production SUV. Yes, that means this latest flagship Bentayga boasts a higher top speed than its Volkswagen Group stablemate, the Lamborghini Urus … albeit by a single kilometre an hour.

Powered by a 467 kW/900 N.m version of the Crewe-based firm’s twin-turbo 6,0-litre W12 engine, the Bentayga Speed will hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,9 seconds (for the record, three-tenths slower than the Urus with which it shares its platform), before topping out at 306 km/h.

As the “performance pinnacle” of the firm’s SUV range, the Bentayga Speed is equipped with four on-road driving modes (and four off-road settings). For the Speed model, sport mode has been tweaked to enhance response from the W12 engine and the eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as from the adaptive suspension. In addition, Bentley says the Bentayga Speed’s ceramic brakes are the “largest and most powerful” ever fitted to a Bentley.

The Bentayga Speed also sports model-specific exterior design elements, including dark-tinted headlamps, body-coloured side-skirts and a tailgate spoiler. Darkened front grilles, a unique 22-inch wheel design (offered in three finishes) and “Speed” badging are also part of the package.

Inside, the Bentayga Speed features what the automaker describes as “elegantly crafted swooshes” around the door, on the edge of the seats and on the lower console. New contrast stitching on the diamond quilting, yet more “Speed” logos (including on the treadplates) and the use of Alcantara for the first time in a Bentayga are furthermore included.

Bentayga Speed is World's Fastest SUV

Bentley has claimed the title of world’s fastest SUV with an upgraded version of its Bentayga. Details below...

Named to avoid any duplicity about its purpose, the new Bentayga Speed features a slightly more powerful version of Bentley’s iconic W12 engine.

Denoting its special status amongst high-performance SUVs, this new Bentayga features darkened light clusters, obligatory ‘Speed’ badging, model-specific 22-inch alloy wheels and a functional tailgate spoiler.

The number which defines Bentley’s Speed SUV is its 306 kph top speed, which makes it a rather academic 5 kph faster than any other W12 powered Bentayga. By implication, the new Speed also claims the title of world’s fastest SUV.

It’s not only fast but quick too, capable of running the zero to 100 kph benchmark in 3.9 seconds – which is two-tenths of a second faster than a ‘standard’ W12 Bentayga. A point of contention is that Lamborghini’s Urus, which rides on a similar platform to Bentayga, is faster in terms of pure acceleration, capable of 0-100kph in 3.6 seconds.

How does the Bentayga Speed manage to deliver its performance gains? Although its peak torque value remains the same as other W12 powered Bentley SUVs, at 900Nm, engineers have managed to boost additional power from the 6.0-litre engine, allowing the Bentayga Speed 467kW of peak power. That’s a gain of 20kW.

To harmonise the performance of a heavy, luxury SUV capable of 306 kph, you need exceptional brakes. As such, Bentayga Speed mounts the largest brake discs ever fitted to a production Bentley. Benefitting from ceramic construction, these brakes can absorb 1 000 °C of heat build-up and generate maximum braking torque of 6 000 Nm.

The Bentley Bentayga will make its public debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in March 2019.

Take that Urus! Bentley reveals world’s fastest SUV (sort of)

And just like that the Lamborghini Urus is no longer the world’s fastest SUV, or so goes all the hype emanating from Crewe, but we’re really splitting hairs here.

Bentley boldly proclaims that its new Bentayga Speed is the world’s fastest production SUV, and technically it’s true, its claimed top speed of 306km/h making it exactly 1km/h faster than the Lamborghini Urus. Not that there are realistically many safe places in the world where you could actually put all those claims to the test but, we suppose, in the bragging-right-obsessed world we live in, fastest is still fastest.

The Bentayga Speed is still slower off the mark, however, taking 3.9 seconds to ‘crawl’ from 0-100km/h, while the Urus does it in 3.6 seconds.

But regardless of how we split hairs and seconds, the new Bentayga Speed is one mighty SUV, and powering it is a hugely impressive 6-litre W12 twin-turbo petrol engine that pushes out 467kW and 900Nm.

While it shares the same selection of four on-road drive modes as the regular Bentayga W12, the ‘Sport’ mode has been recalibrated to offer even more response from the engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and ‘Dynamic Ride’ 48V electronically controlled suspension system.

The Speed also promises a more sonorous soundtrack from the exhaust, during start up and when downshifting.

In keeping with the sportier theme, the exterior styling is modified with darker-tint headlights and air intakes, body-coloured side skirts and unique 22-inch wheels available in three finishes. Inside it’s set apart by Alcantara trim and a new contrast stitching colour for the diamond quilting.

Bentley Announce Design Series For The Bentayga V8

In terms of luxurious and exquisite cars, Bentley is right up there when creating their machines. The Bentayga is likewise one of the most luxurious SUVs that money can buy. Now, though, Bentley has released a new option for buyers called the Design Series which uses the Bentayga V8 as the base. The extra special touches on these few Bentaygas are done by Bentley’s Mulliner division – the place customers go to get bespoke touches done on their vehicles.

What does the Design Series entail, then? In terms of the exterior, you’ll get a body-colour finish on the front bumper and some dark chrome finishes on all the bits that would be plainly chrome in colour. The black theme also continues at the rear with some gloss-black exhaust tips. A new set of wheels has been created for the Design Series too. If you should wish, you can get these seven-spoke Paragon wheels fitted to your V8 beast. Like Rolls-Royce, the B on the hub caps are self-levelling, meaning they will remain upright even when the wheels are turning.

Bentley Bentayga Speed: SA pricing for 'world's fastest SUV'

The new Bentley Bentayga Speed, which the Crewe-based firm bills as the world’s fastest production SUV, was revealed back in February 2019. And now we can share local pricing with potential South African buyers.

Topping out at 306 km/h, the Bentayga Speed boasts a higher top speed than its Volkswagen Group stablemate, the Lamborghini Urus ... albeit by a single kilometre an hour.

Drawing its urge from a twin-turbo 6,0-litre W12 engine churning out 467 kW and 900 N.m, the Bentayga Speed will hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 3,9 seconds (for the record, that’s three-tenths slower than the Urus with which it shares its platform). Its peak power output is 20 kW up on the standard W12, and is offered slightly lower in the rev range (at 5 000 r/min as opposed to 5 250 r/min).

So, the price? Well, the Bentayga Speed will start at R4 450 000, which works out to R463 000 more than the standard W12 model (and R955 000 more than the Urus)

Bengala Create Military Spec Bentley Bentayga

When one thinks of the Bentley Bentayga, usually you would think of the epitome of luxury and exquisite finishes in and outside of the car – the best that British luxury has to offer. A Spanish company called Bengala Automotive Design SL, on the other hand, seemingly had a different array of thoughts when they saw the Bentayga. The result of their somewhat unconventional thoughts is a military-spec, murdered out version of Bentley’s first SUV.

As you can probably tell, most of the work has been done to the exterior of the car. Starting at the front, Bengala has added a new front bumper which seems to offer the Bentayga the capability of bashing through buildings. Of course, what would an off-road vehicle be without additional LED light bars? Therefore, Bengala has added two – one on the roof and another on the front bumper.

Bentley Bentayga Speed 2019 review

Should I buy one?

If you’re not into big, expensive and luxurious SUVs, not only will the Bentayga Speed fail to change your mind, but it will also more likely entrench your position. If you are, however, be advised that you can judge for yourself the worst aspects of this car simply by looking at this page.

If you can face, or even like, its appearance, if you don’t mind driving a car called a Bentley Bentayga, the rest of the news is entirely good apart, of course, when you have to drop another hundred quid’s worth of unleaded in it, which will be quite often.

For while Bentley is still struggling to get its head around what kind of style to present to the outside world, the substance is better than ever. Of course, the Bentayga comes from the same stock as the Audi Q8, Urus and Porsche Cayenne, but the virtue of a meal lies not only in its ingredients but also the skill of the chef. And the truth is this strong, silent, comfortable and cosseting big Bentley is as good an example of its art as exists out there at present.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid 2019 review

Should I buy one?

It depends. If you’re looking for a traditional Bentley driving experience, where the majesty with which the performance is delivered is as important as the performance itself, the answer is no. The engine is just a device for doing a job, and I cannot offhand recall when I last drove a Bentley with a powerplant so far removed from the traditional values of the brand.

But this Bentayga is not for those people. Instead, it will be bought by those who love the idea and image of Bentley ownership, care not one whit about what the car’s like to drive, but are drawn also to both the financial benefits of its hybrid system and being able to appear both affluent and environmentally aware all at the same time. And for them the Bentayga Hybrid will likely make a tempting proposition.

For me, a 2.6-tonne SUV is never going to be the last word in ecological good citizenship and, were I in the market for such a car, I’d be only too happy to finance the additional £6400 required to allow me to fall gratefully into the arms of the powerful, sonerous and altogether more Bentley Bentayga V8.

Bentley CEO says coupé-style Bentayga is not ‘imminent’, but

The head of Bentley Motors says a coupé-style version of the Bentayga is not “imminent”, but adds the firm does see itself “doing different twists on SUVs in the future”.

Speaking to motoring.com.au, Bentley president and CEO Adrian Hallmark said the firm is currently “not looking at” launching any new SUV derivatives.

“Is there an imminent, or very near, coupé? No. Are we looking at it right now? No,” he told the Australian publication. “Could we imagine doing different twists on SUVs in the future? Yes.”

Of course, some other models sharing the Volkswagen Group's same MLB platform have already spawned coupé-style SUVs, such as the Audi Q8 and the Porsche Cayenne Coupé.

Hallmark went on to say Bentley planned to further improve the Bentayga “through technology”, adding “we haven’t even scratched the surface of its potential”.

Bentley Not Looking At Any Other SUVs For Now

A couple of months back we heard rumors about Bentley possibly building a bigger Bentayga and even a ‘Bentayga Sport’ Coupe but according to a new report from CarSales, the current Bentayga is more than enough.

The Bentley Bentayga will stand alone as the SUV standard-bearer for the 100-year-old British brand as there are no plans to re-shape the Bentayga into a four-door coupe or to slide a smaller SUV into the Bentley line-up, at least in the near future.

“Direct answer? We are not looking at that,” Hallmark said bluntly in response to the question about additional SUV models.

Updated 2020 Bentley Bentayga to receive tech overhaul

Bentley will bring its SUV up to date with the Continental GT and Flying Spur next year, and first prototypes have emerged

Bentley will update its best-selling model - the Bentayga SUV - next year to bring it up to scratch with its latest models, and disguised prototypes have hit the road.

Although not exactly long in the tooth, the Bentayga has been around since 2016 with no significant styling or technology upgrades. Since its launch an all-new Continental GT has come to market, while the latest generation of Flying Spur will arrive in dealers soon.

In order to ensure the Rolls-Royce Cullinan rival isn't left behind by both its competitors and its siblings, revisions to the exterior will bring it into line with the latest brand look. It's too early to tell how extensive these will be, but expect a reshaped grille, fresh bumpers and tweaks to the lights front and rear.

Bentley Hybrid Bentayga Hits Europe

Luxury car brand Bentley has announced a hybrid version of its Bentayga luxury SUV. The numbers make for very impressive reading and the vehicle has just gone on sale in Europe. Some details...

Built in Crewe, England, the Bentley Bentayga comes to market with a highly-advanced powertrain. Using a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine mated to an electric setup, the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid promises fantastic performance without compromising on economy.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid: pricing confirmed for brand's first hybrid

British brand's first electrified production model offers 24 miles of electric-only range and a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec

The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid, the firm's first electrified production vehicle, is now on sale in the UK, priced from £133,100.

First revealed at the Geneva motor show in March 2018, order books for the plug-in hybrid SUV were due to open later that year. However, the launch was significantly delayed in the European market as a result of WLTP emissions certification.

The luxury plug-in hybrid is capable of up to 24.2 miles of electric-only range on the WLTP combined cycle. It couples a 126bhp, 295lb ft electric motor with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine for a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec and top speed of 158mph. Total power output is unconfirmed, but it can be expected to match the 455bhp of the powertrain-sharing Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid, while torque is rated at 516lb ft.

Unique to the Bentayga Hybrid is a range of sat-nav features that automatically calculate the "optimum combination of electric motor and engine" according to the planned journey. Three driving modes - EV, Hybrid and Hold - offer varying balances of electric and engine power, with regenerative braking working to recover energy at all times.
