New Bentley Bentayga Speed to be unveiled next week

World's fastest production SUV to be facelifted in line with the standard car but it won't be sold in Europe

Bentley has confirmed that the facelifted Speed variant of its Bentayga SUV will touch down next Wednesday (12 August) and released official images of a camouflaged prototype.

The outgoing Bentayga Speed is the fastest production SUV on sale, with its 190mph top speed giving it a 0.5mph edge over the Lamborghini Urus. It has only been on sale for around a year but will now be brought into line with the updated standard car, revealed in June.

Given how recently the model was added to the range, it is unlikely to receive any substantial mechanical tweaks. That means the current version's 6.0-litre W12 - a tuned variant of that found in the standard car - will be carried over largely unmodified, with a power output of 626bhp and 664lb ft.

If that's the case, the Bentayga Speed will not go on sale here, following Bentley's decision to retain just the 542bhp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8 for the facelifted SUV in Europe. The standard car will also receive a V6 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid option later this year.

Despite the prototype's camouflage wrap, it's apparent that the top-rung Bentayga will be marked out by black trim elements and wheels, a quad-exit sports exhaust and subtle front and rear diffusers. As with the current car, a large downforce-enhancing rear wing will also feature.

Bentley Bentayga 2020 UK review

Should I buy one?

Still, the 2020 Bentayga is an all-round brilliant machine, delivered at a level of build quality that most of us would see no way to improve, which in turn makes the price seem entirely reasonable.

Bentley is all too aware it now has a hard-won market position to defend, and has built the machine to do it.

Bentley Bentayga Speed

Bentley Motors announced full details of the new Bentayga Speed - the pinnacle of the Bentayga family - effortless performance, yet no compromise on luxury. Hand-built at Crewe, the Bentayga Speed combines the W12 powertrain and many of the models luxurious features as standard, including the Mulliner Driving Specification.

Building on a long tradition of Speed models that was born with the Continental GT in 2007, the new Bentayga Speed maintains the performance credentials proved by its predecessor, which claimed the production SUV record at the gruelling Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in 2018.

The new Bentley Bentayga Speed builds on the completely refreshed design of the new Bentayga, adopting the same Bentley design DNA now prevalent across the entire model range. Introducing the very latest onboard technology and an even more cosseting cabin, the new model is significantly revised both inside and out.

Bentley's Chairman and Chief Executive, Adrian Hallmark, comments: "The new Bentayga has already raised the benchmark for luxury SUVs, against which all others are measured. Ahead of the launch of the new Bentayga Hybrid - the world's only definitive luxury hybrid - in the coming months, it's important that we still recognise the customer desire for absolute performance. The new Bentayga Speed remains the fastest SUV in the world, but more than that, it's also the most luxurious version of the new Bentayga - the best of both worlds, the pinnacle."

The new Bentley Bentayga Speed takes the Bentayga's extraordinary abilities to new levels, utilising the 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged engine that delivers peak power of 635 PS (626 bhp). Effortless acceleration is always guaranteed thanks to 900 Nm (664 lb.ft) of torque, available as a plateau from 1,500 rpm to 5,000 rpm. The assembly of the W12 powertrain takes the skilled engine builders approximately ten per cent of the total hours required for the manufacture of the Bentayga Speed.

With exceptional performance, comfort and handling, maximum speed is also increased to 190 mph (306 km/h), while the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint is delivered in 3.9 seconds.

Bentley Bentayga Speed: world's fastest SUV updated for 2021

Top-rung SUV adopts new styling and tech, but keeps its W12 motor and won't come to Europe

Bentley has updated the top-rung Speed variant of its Bentayga SUV in line with the facelifted standard car, bringing new styling, a revamped interior and efficiency-boosting powertrain technology.

As before, the Bentayga Speed calls on a 6.0-litre W12 producing 626bhp and 664lb ft to accelerate from 0-62mph in 3.9sec and on to a top speed of 190mph - making it the world’s fastest SUV. Retaining its motor means it won’t be sold in the UK, with Bentley choosing instead to send it to “regions where demand for 12-cylinder SUVs remains strong”, including the US, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.

Although power output remains unchanged, new cylinder-deactivation technology is claimed to bring “significant economy gains under part-throttle cruising conditions” as well as reducing CO2 emissions. The ECU deactivates six cylinders at a time, where possible, and alternates between the two to avoid them cooling down, which would make them less efficient.

Additionally, the SUV now offers a coasting functionality, which disconnects the engine from the gearbox at cruising speed to minimise fuel consumption.

Four driving modes are available: Comfort, Sport, Custom and Bentley - tuned to the recommendations of Bentley’s engineers. Sport mode has been recalibrated to improve throttle response and gearshifts, which Bentley says gives “a more dynamic and engaging dri

Facelifted Bentley Bentayga (including Speed): prices for SA are out!

Wondering how much the facelifted Bentley Bentayga will cost you in South Africa? Well, we have local prices for the updated luxury SUV.

The refreshed Bentayga V8 starts at R3 825 000, again powered by a twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 petrol engine sending 404 kW and 770 N.m to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The British firm claims a top speed of 290 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of 4,5 seconds.

Looking for even more oomph? Well, the local range also includes the updated Bentayga Speed, which now kicks off at R5 450 000. This variant employs a twin-turbo 6,0-litre W12 engine worth an unchanged 467 kW and 900 N.m. As before, the 0-100 km/h sprint takes a claimed 3,9 seconds, with top speed listed as a heady 306 km/h.

So, what’s new with the Crewe-based firm's SUV? Well, the Bentayga’s updated look brings it neatly in line with its siblings, the third-generation Continental GT and the new Flying Spur. In fact, the company says “every panel” at the front of the vehicle has been redesigned.

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

Bentley is taking the next step on its journey to a sustainable future with the launch of the new Bentayga Hybrid - the only electrified true-luxury SUV in the world, and a model that Bentley predicts will become the best-selling member of the new Bentayga family.

Following the recent launches of the new Bentayga V8 and Bentayga Speed, the new Bentley Bentayga Hybrid becomes the third model in the most successful luxury SUV portfolio the segment has ever seen.

The new exterior and interior design emphasises Bentley design DNA across the entire model range, giving Bentley the freshest and most modern product family of any luxury car company.

The new Bentayga Hybrid offers the ultimate in electric luxury, with smooth and silent progress through urban environments, whilst having the grand touring capability to escape the city and explore further. Customers of the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid can escape the noise of the city through the refined and acoustically-isolated serenity of the cabin without engine interference, using up to 31 miles of electric-only range (NEDC), before physically leaving the city behind with the comfort of a total combined range of 536 miles (NEDC).

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid: luxury PHEV SUV updated for 2021

Plug-in option reintroduced for new-look Bentayga, paving the way for Crewe's second PHEV later this year

The updated Bentayga Hybrid is predicted to be the strongest-selling variant of Bentley's luxury SUV, arriving as the first of two plug-in models from Crewe in 2021.

The facelifted Hybrid arrives just a year after the original version was launched, following a raft of styling, interior and technology updates for the wider Bentayga range in summer 2020.

It will help pave the way for Bentley to achieve its goal of offering exclusively plug-in hybrid and battery-electric cars by 2026, and it will be joined later this year by a PHEV version of the Flying Spur saloon.

Like the standard Bentayga, the Bentayga Hybrid adopts a new-look front end with a larger grille, LED matrix headlights and wider wings, while elliptical brake lights inspired by the brand's Continental GT coupé and a repositioned numberplate distinguish the rear end from that of its predecessor.

There's A New Bentley Bentayga Hybrid For The Vast Number Of People In The Market For Bentley Bentayga Hybrids - Jalopnik

When the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid debuted in Geneva in 2018 no one really knew who it was for, except regulators.

The Hybrid is slower and less powerful than the other Bentaygas, and yet still costs as much as a small Midwestern house. But you get better fuel economy!

1609832795705.png

I don’t mean to be totally glib, as I can certainly imagine a wealthy person buying this to make themselves feel slightly better about their impact on the world, ethical consumption and all of that.

But then I don’t know why that same person wouldn’t want to go for the Tesla Model X Performance.

If you do happen to be a person interested in the Bentayga Hybrid here are some stats for 2021:
  • It will have a 3.0-liter V6 which, along with the electric motor, will make 443 horsepower.
  • It will have a range of 536 miles, and 31 miles of all-electric range, according to European testing standards; EPA standards aren’t yet available, but you can expect a drop.
  • Bentley claims that the serenity inside cannot be rivaled.
  • There is a new 10.9-inch screen.
Bentley also revealed the following numbers, which are pretty fascinating if true:

Bentley’s research shows over 90 per cent of customers use their first-generation Bentayga Hybrid on a daily basis or several times a week, and nearly 100 per cent of customers use EV mode, with half of them consistently undertaking journeys of less than 30 miles.

Now, I would assume that a fair number of these customers aren’t doing the driving themselves, which could perhaps explain some of the appeal, as it doesn’t much matter what powers the car your chauffeur drives.

In which case, why the hell not.

Bentley has built its 200 000th vehicle (a Bentayga) after 102 years

Bentley Motors says it has now built 200 000 vehicles, with the milestone vehicle rolling off the assembly line some 102 years after the automaker was established.

The 200 000th vehicle is a Bentayga Hybrid destined for a customer in China.

Interestingly, the milestone vehicle is also the 155 582th vehicle built at Crewe since 2003 (with 44 418 units – 38 933 in Crewe – manufactured from 1919 to 2002). Indeed, Bentley says it is now building 85 cars a day, matching its one-month output from just two decades ago.

The British firm says the Continental GT has played a major role in its volume growth, with the 80 000th example having been built in January 2021. The Bentayga, too, has made a marked difference, with more than 25 000 units built since 2015. Since 2005, the company has also produced 40 000 examples of the Flying Spur.

Range Rover vs Bentley Bentayga: Classy Brit brawlers face off

Bentley asks £150,000 for its luxurious high-rise SUV. Can a Range Rover fill the same brief for considerably less money?

Two-hundred-and-eight grand. Sorry, I just needed to see it written down. That’s what this Bentley Bentayga has been optioned up to from its list price of £147,600. A little uncommon, I’ll grant you – but not unknown.

Anyway, at least it makes the idea of an £89,000 Range Rover somewhat easier to get your head around, no? This is, as much as anything, a luxury car comparison test.

I’m not sure Bentley would agree, though. This mere £89,110 (as tested; £86,920 before options) is a Mercedes-Benz price, not a Bentley one. In a different sphere, mate. Well, we’ll see, shall we? How far can the Range Rover’s appeal stretch? And can it make it all the way to the Bentayga?

Aesthetically speaking, things have moved on for the Bentayga since its 2016 introduction, thanks to some modifications last year (hence us having this test), which I think you can tell most notably by the new elliptical tail-lights.

There are changes inside, too. Bentley says more than 1000 components have been changed overall, but given that those things include matrix headlights and new windscreen wipers, you know you’re dealing with a fundamentally similar car.
