Hi guys,

I just wanted to know your opinion/suggestions on the best ISP offering for a 384kb line (for everyday browsing and email checking) in terms of:

1. reliable speeds of 35KBS,
2. price,
3. prefereably no contract,
4. cap should be in the region of 10-15 GB.

Thanks

Afrihost R151.03
OpenWeb R98
Axxess R196
Which one to choose?

I would suggest Telkom for reliability (most reliable ISP atm) but their 384k package doesnt come with a cap that big so you would have to add more bandwidth to the account

Openweb is the Best ISP i have ever used.

They have the uncapped lite plan (384kbps), which is R196 Per month. I got speeds of 46-57kb/s download speed with these guys. And there is no contract, you can choose to take it once off, or take it monthly without contract but if you take it monthly and want to cancel you must do that in 30 days notice.

384KBPS lines are such a waste

Why not rather spend the bucks, like I have and go for the 8ta 10gb option. Yip and your speed wont be 0.384mbps, but instead upto 21.6mbps. So when u want to download something u dont need to wait ages, in matter of fact it will go helluva quick. You can also pay the extra R100pm for 10gb during 12-5am so u can schedule any downloads for them, if u wish to download.

All in all it's much better than dsl, and you can get a 3g router, either netgear or trendnet. For sharing too all your other pcs, ipads, etc. Also what I've done. (The router can share wired and wireless).

So why the heck spend money on a 384kbps line?

Oops 8ta is 199pm for 10gb, or 299 if you take the 12-5am extra 10gb.

The modem is about R650 from them, the router about 800 from elsewhere.

Oh, hehe the Cell C modems can be used with 8ta Simcards, my old 7.2mbps one works well.

Go with the cheapest. If that doesn't work, change it next month. Email & browsing works fine on most products so you shouldn't run into shaping issues. Though I find it difficult to believe that you'll be doing 15gigs worth of browsing.

So why the heck spend money on a 384kbps line?
Because you can move close to 100gigs a month for a price similar to your 20 gigs. Plus wireless sucks for gaming.

You're quite right though, wireless is a feasible option for many.

Wel if it's for gaming I'll say afrihost 384k uncapped, dunno why but I manage a latency of 30-40ms to jhb servers(from bedfordview) when playing call of duty black ops. Only thing is that you need to use less than 800mb a day to remain unshaped but that more than enough for most people.

3G is a option but the quality of service will have to be tested first, seen lots of people get 3G (cell C 2gb once off) and then find that get dial up speeds ( not just cell c ).

End of the day there are lots of options to choose from, just depends what you want it for

Hi guys

Thanks for all the good feedback.
Haven't yet decided because the account is not for me, thanks. :)

Don't say that just yet, 3gb was fine till I went uncapped, now I can't live with less than 20 a month... You'll be surprised what effect this freedom has
