The Mega 105wr Telkom modem that we use finally died. Wow this was a piece of crap. I think even having this thing on a LAN makes the LAN unstable. So I took out a really old modem that we used and everything is now running from it. Since it's so old and it's good to have a spare I think it might be best to buy a new one. Down time means lost work, etc. and everything standing still.. It's for an online business and Internet is really really important. What would be a really good & reliable modem to buy.

My internet speed sometimes grinds almost to a halt. I found by restarting the Mega 105WR router, seems to rectify this problem.

Does anybody else have the same problem?

This also happened to me. I found that turning off the wireless solved the problem for me.

Check out the Billion 7300W (150mbps) or 7300N (300mbs), very solid routers!

Been pretty happy with Netgear for a while. Whatever you buy make sure the router has decent security (firewall etc) and suites your LAN/WIFI requirements

+1 for the TP-Link W8960N! It's available at Sybaritic for R501: http://www.sybaritic.co.za/store/product_info.php?products_id=52108 * Mika1000 posted the link already.

Cisco/Linksys hardware is good, but very expensive. eg. WAG320N.
Unfortunately I have no idea of how good/bad the ADSL SNR margins are with the WAG320N compared to the D-Link and TP-Link modems.

The Siemens Gigaset SX 762 is apparently also very good in terms of gaming latencies and ADSL SNR margins.
The drawbacks are that it is extremely expensive if you use it as a simple ADSL modem and WiFi AP, it doesn't have Wireless N, and I don't like it's web interface at all.

The new Netgear modems sux in terms of SNR margins, which is a big let down if you want to use 4Mbps ADSL and you live a reasonable distance from the DSLAM. They also lack bridge & half-bridge modes, and I think they don't have SNMP either.

I can only suggest D-Link and TP-Link ADSL modems at this stage, unless you're prepared to pay a massive premium for like a Cisco all-in-one device OR other Enterprise class modem/router.
The D-Link and TP-Link ADSL modems have:
  1. Very good SNR margins
  2. SNMP support, which is useful for monitoring traffic flow to the Internet with software like PRTG Traffic Monitor or MRTG
  3. Bridge & Half-bridge modes, which would allow you to dial PPPoE connections from PC's linked to the modem
  4. SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) Firewalls
  5. Reasonable/cheap price tags
Currently the things that I have against D-Link modems are that their official Contact Us webpage doesn't work and that upgrading firmware will brick the router if you accidentally uploaded the wrong build.

Pada what do you think of the Telkom Netgear DG834GUv5. i have it and have no problems at all
I think it's a piece of junk to be honest. We use one at our church and I'm really thinking of replacing it with a TP-Link, seeing that our SNR margin sits on 10dB at this very moment.

My router details

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 507 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 11.0 db
Noise Margin 26.50 db 22.0 db

Had no problems on my router so far tho

Stevie G, you're close to the DSLAM, so you shouldn't have any issues.
As you'll see, your ADSL modem isn't synchronizing at 4096/512kbps either.

Here is our Netgear DG834GUv5's stats:
Code:
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 507 kbps
Line Attenuation 32.5 db 12.5 db
Noise Margin 10.95 db 15.5 db

My Telkom ADSL 5100 modem is synchronizing at precisely 4096/512.
Code:
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.5 db 11.0 db
Noise Margin 20.5 db 14.0 db

It is possible that there is something wrong with our DG384GUv5 modem, because it's SNR margin is terribly low compared to yours. Seeing that your downstream line attenuation is only 6dB lower than ours, our downstream SNR margin should've been like 20dB.

A good modem should also be able to sync at precisely 4096kbps down and 512kbps up.

Why would the modem sunc at 4095kbps? I had a D-link 2500U before before i fried it somehow. I did post my stats with that modem i think. must just check what the LA an NM were to comapre the modems.
I can see my exchange from my window. its like 40m-50m away. will see if i can find it and post it.

what about flashing it Pada, do you think it will fix it and get better readings from the modem
