Best all round smartphone with Longevity?

Hahaha. I think most of you will laugh at the title. Even I know the word "Longevity" and Technology does not belong in sentence.

ANYWAY. Im due for an upgrade this month, and its the 1st time in about 8 years that its the 3rd of Feb and I dont have a new phone. TOO MANY ****ING CHOICES!

The problem is this:

OS: Android/iOS/Symbian/Win7/others (I say others because I am really not interested in BlackBerry.
MAKE: Samsung/HTC/SonyEricsson/Apple (I know the 1st 3 specialize in Android, and Apple only with iOS
Features: AMOLED/SuperAMOLED/S-LCD (wtf is that?) Push Mail/AppStores/4"screen/3.*"screen/Physcial QWERTY/OnScreen QWERTY/Different GPS Software/and about a million more other effing features.

My problem is that I want it all, and I want it all to last 2 years. I know... never gonna happen.

I was VERY keen for the Nokia E7, until they delayed it, again, and I heard rumours that Nokia is moving to Android.
Then I was VERY keen on the Samsung Galaxy S. thought I might get a Galaxy Tab to accompany it... Then realized how OLD (launched Sept 2010) the Galaxy S is.
Now, I honestly dont have a clue.

Android updates their OS every 3 months it seems (which is very frustrating) but I do like Android.

I have seen and used iPhone, very nice, smooth, works well, but dont all the new smartphones work well, and are smooth, and are nice? I dont really like Apple, never have... I think the iPad is too big, and no matter what phone I get, I'll probably get the Galaxy Tab just because its smaller, easier to hold, and I dont like Apple.

But the issue is with what phone to get. I've read and re-read reviews, watched YouTube reviews, asked mates, and I honestly dont know what to get.

I think, if the Samsung Galaxy S2 was out, I would get that, but then there are the new dual core phones coming out... but I dont want to wait... just like I didnt want to wait for the E7.

So, I'm asking advice... I use my phone for EVERYTHING. Im not one of those guys that dont utilize their phone. I use it for everything. I love apps, love twitter, love watching movies, love recording videos, love taking pics, love browsing the net, love wifi, 3g, and edge when all else fails. Not tooooo much of cellphone gamer. Love business features like emails, doc viewer, etc...

that last paragraph reads like a classified ad... i just hope the right cellphone responds.

Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, You're our only hope.

I was thinking of the HTC purely for the Android. I used be totally against it when they had Win6.5 or whatever it was.

Any more votes for Android?

Any idea if the HTC desire HD will get any more Android updates? 2.3?

I got an htc desire on a two year contract for the same reason too. It will last for a long time till I feel the need (not desire lol) to upgrade.
 
Galaxy S may be "old", but it has some of the best hardware on the market. And the battery can actually last through the day with heavy usage.
Samsung is crap with software but if you can install a custom ROM you have what is in my opinion the best phone around.

The HTC Desire Z is a great option of you want a keyboard. And nothing wrong with the Desire HD either.

If you're going to get a Galaxy Tab, then maybe it's not worth getting the highest end phone if you're planning to have your Tab with you most of the time. I have a Galaxy S phone, and because of it I find it hard to justify getting a tablet even though I would like the big screen sometimes.

The Desire HD with Android 2.2 runs perfectly. No "lag" whatsoever. It's quick, no, it flies.

I've seen reports of one or two reported problems with Android 2.3, so rather stay with Froyo till it's sorted.

How is the Desire HD in the sun in terms of screen wize?

I also like the monster better. :)

The Desire HD's screen is very viewable in direct sunlight.
 
Honestly I'm still not closer to deciding on a phone.
I really like the SuperAmoled screen on the Samsung... and reviews say the desire hd suffers rom short battery life. I suppose most smartphones do, so thats not a real deal breaker.

i think im off to vodaworld today...

Cos the build quality of the Desire HD is much better than the Samsung Plasticky S
HTC Sense is far better than Samsung's UI customizations
HTC Sync works very well....not what I've heard of Samsung's Kies software
Comes out of the box with Android 2.2

If you own a smartphone, accept the fact that they're battery hungry & get a car and desk charger - problem solved.

I agree about the battery.. I've only had smartphones for the last 6 years, so i understand all about the battery....
When did you get your HTC desire HD?
 
iPhone has set the standard in terms of software updates. The hardware is also a cut above (screen, battery life). So that would be my recommendation.

Samsung have got some good hardware in the Galaxy S - great screen. The software is good, but not quite as good as HTC Sense IMO. Also they have lagged WRT to updates, and HTC have the best record in this regard (amongst Android manufacturers)

Can anyone tell me about the GPS Navigation software on the HTC/SAMSUNG... I currently have a Nokia N97 with Free Navigation I use all the time. Not looking for free SAtNav, but just want to know if the HTC has maps for South Africa? I think the Samsung is just Google Maps.?

Well, I tried!

Android has great built in navigation since 2.0 AFAIK. I don't know if the manufacturers remove it. I'm sure HTC don't. The iPhone has a ton of different GPS softwares.

Dont need a ton.. need ONE that works... Thanks... I know that the iPhone is great, but I think there are better spec. phones out there
