Here's another very happy Desire HD owner! 
If you asked me a week ago, I would have said Symbian (been using my E71 for a few years now).
But now with the MS announcement, I'd say Blackberry. People are still buying the 8520s. iOS is also a good choice, since Apple have been very good at rolling out updates to their older models (usually a new version of iOS will work with devices up to 2 years old).
The reason why I won't go with Android or WinMoX is that they are still very young and developing at blistering speed.
Android releases are coming too fast and the manufaturers can't keep up.
WinMoX has a bunch of missing features which they are continually updating. I don't own a WinMoX phone, so I have no idea how the updating works.

You're happy with the bare minimum, for that I must applaud you.
Can't see myself with a plastic phone, a small 65K screen and max 3.6Mbps HSDPA. My iPhone 3G, that is more than two years old, has better specs than any blackberry.
If you want to rave about blackberry messenger, search for "WhatsApp" before you do.

I was addressing the question of best smartphone for longevity.
I own a Galaxy S. And it's already outdated.

It's definitely not outdated!
We're just experiencing a new focus for the computer industry. However, that doesn't mean that my dual-core notebook has become obsolete, just cos Intel launched the new Core iX range of processors. My notebook can still run Windows 7 blazingly fast.
It would be nice to own a Core i7 notebook, but do I really need it? The answer is no.
Blackberry isnt really that much of a smartphone... I use a bb 9700 as my primary phone and i use a galaxy s as my phone/everything else at work bec of free wifi etc...
I like both bec they offer me different things together...

Run all your mail accounts through Gmail = push email
all sms + mms through WhatsApp = messaging on steroids
Then where does it leave the blackberry?

As stated in another thread, perhaps the best smartphone today is the HD2. It's a classic for ROM cooks, so you can make it what you want. Thanks to the chefs at XDA-Dev it already runs:

* Android
* WP7
* Ubuntu
* Windows 95
* Windows 98
* Meego
(not that you might want all of these, but the point is it can if you want to)
No phone has a larger or lovelier display. It's thin. Superb build quality. 1GHz Snapdragon. 3.5 audio jack. GPS. etc. This is the first time ever my replacement phone will be the same phone.

It is awesome!
And that is my vision for the future....you'll purchase your hardware and then choose the software you want to run on it.
That's how it should be.

Free internet. If you on the road allot the blackberrry still suits the people and the keyboard factor also has its appeal for some people
This is why I like the idea of android so much. When I first got my SGS I felt my blackberry was a better phone for my purposes (but with me not travelling as much anymore and getting wifi at home now), the android powered SGS really is superior, (except emailing still is a better experience on my BB, actually anything you have to type), but the software people made it real easy to switch over with software like Swype etc.
The part that bugs me about android though, is not android itself but the manufacturers, why should I lose my warranty if I root my phone or put on custom firmware. The whole idea of android is for more freedom, and then the manufacturers restrict us like this. They are just going to cause more people to buy iPhones, as even though I don't like the idea of doing it the iPhone way, they get updated to new software immediately where if there is new software for me I first have to wait for Samsung.
I mean, if I have to wait for Samsung to put there touchwiz etc on, they are forcing there environment upon me. I just want vanilla android, maybe next time I will buy a Nexus phone.
Edit: O, ja. I rooted my phone and loaded a custom rom that suited me. I love my phone now, but I would love it more with gingerbread and seeing as how long I waited for Samsung to bring out Froyo, I won't go the official road this time round either. But we shouldn't be forced to wait this long in any case.

Reason I went with android is because of the quick updates and after a year or so ill root the phone and customize the **** out of it.
Must give massive credit to android as they are on the verge of dominating the mobile is market in such a short space of time.
PS. Thanks for the tip on the android 2.3 keyboard. Rocks!!!!!
Like I said earlier... I am over the moon at my choice and I literally find something new to do on and with my phone almost everyday.
