Best all round smartphone with Longevity?

Everyone says that. But the iPhone has the highest rez screen, thinnest, best battery life, awesome camera blah blah blah. It doesn't stand back for ANY phone.

What rock have you been living under? The only thing that the iPhone has is it's screen, nothing else distinguishes it from the crowd, every single other feature is a grade below the highest end devices right now.

In what world is the iphone the thinnest? The only thing the iphone has is a retina display.

Sent from my Galaxy S running darky's rom sent to me by little green robots from the future.

But the iPhone has the highest rez screen...

The small size of the screen defeats the point of having such a high resolution. If 800x480 on a 4-inch looks perfectly sharp at a normal viewing distance then I just don't see the point of increasing the resolution.
And yes I've seen the iPhone screen. The perceived sharpness was identical to my Galaxy S if I used it normally. So I'd pick the bigger screen here, it's more comfortable for web browsing.

Thanks Synaesthesia... Believe me, Im tempted to turn to the iSide. But dont think Im gonna.

Can anyone tell me about the GPS Navigation software on the HTC/SAMSUNG... I currently have a Nokia N97 with Free Navigation I use all the time. Not looking for free SAtNav, but just want to know if the HTC has maps for South Africa? I think the Samsung is just Google Maps.?

The HTC Desire HD comes with Route 66 (TomTom) navigational maps installed on the phone, you can use the turn-by-turn navigation for 30 days, then it's R277 for a lifetime licence (I bought my licence the first day :) ).

Really nice thing is that the maps work in offline mode, so even if you don't have a EDGE/3G connection, your maps will still work.

@ OP: Your choice should be clear as mud by now :D

Well, some of you will be please to know that I now own a.....

Drum Roll....

HTC DESIRE HD! BEAST OF A PHONE.

Played with the Samsung... nice...
Played with the HTC Deisre HD... WOW...

Busy playing around with it now...

Any tips?

iPhone has set the standard in terms of software updates. The hardware is also a cut above (screen, battery life). So that would be my recommendation.
:wtf: Still looks the same to me. Iphone, iphone 3g, iphone 3gs, iphone 4.......

Congrats on the phone.
For navigation I use google maps with brut mod (to enable the turn by turn in SA). Works 100%. Doesn't seem to use a huge amount of data but I guess none is better than some.

Such as? And don't tell me - XYZ has a 10mp camera if it's inferior in quality to the 5mp on the iPhone. (Megapixel myth)

Which are thinner? The unreleased LG Optimus black?

Not trying to be snarky, I'm genuinely curious to hear the answer!

What I mean with an iPhone you're always guaranteed to have regular software updates, the day that they're released. Also your phone is good for several revisions.

With Android it's a lottery. Some manufacturers almost never update the software. Lots of phones still on 1.5 or 1.6! How many are running 2.2? It's really irritating. Even the Nexus One doesn't have a 2.3 update!

Last I checked, people with iphone 3gs complaint, because the IOS4 update slowed their phones down.

Get yourself a BB Torch and when the Playbook arrive get one of those too. All phones crash sometime or the other. Not Blackberries. Nothing comes close to the solid operating system of the Blackberry.

Yes, its not the best multimedia phone out there but you must decide. Do you want a toy or do you want to do serious business with the occasional pleasure inbetween??

BB Torch and BB Playbook

Enjoy your new phone! :)

Any tips?

Yes.

Install the "Keyboard from Android 2.3 by Steven Lin" on your Desire HD pronto!

Much better than the default HTC keyboard.

*Just follow the instructions listed on the installation page of the keyboard app page, otherwise you might think it's not installed.

Excellent choice both in phone and OS, i'm sure the DesireHD will get 2.3 and probably 2.4 as well, it's built to be "future proof" and HTC have a great track record in terms of updates.

Tips? Get Applanet ;D and go wild.
Apps wise i'd suggest looking at:

Dolphin Browser HD (excellent web browser, faster than the built-in one)
RockPlayer (great video player, and set it to Hardware decode)
ESPN ScoreCenter
Aldiko (great book eReader)
System Panel (taskmanager, not realy necessary but just to kill any apps that are causing trouble)
SafeWallet (to keep card details etc... under password lock)
jetVD (To download high quality upto HD720p YouTube vids)
Angry Birds (great, addictive gaming)
Ranging Thunder 2 (racing game)
Super KO Boxing 2 (quite an entertaining boxing game)

Enjoy your DesireHD.
Androids are offer a great balance of Media, Social Networking, Web browsing and 'business', forget those underpowered BlackBerrys. ;)
