Hey guys, hope somebody more in the know with printers can help me. I'm looking for a basic laser printer - essentially something that hits the sweet spot in terms of the cost of the printer, price of replacement toners and the amount of pages yielded per toner.

I've seen that the HP P1006 is quite affordable, but it seems to have a relatively low yield for the price of the toner.

Any other suggestions? And where can I source the printer and it's consumables?

I bought myself a HP entry level laser printer (black only) I think its the 1010 model. This thing has been going like a 2-stroke... never a days issue!! :D

I have the same one and get very good value out of it....been one of my best purchases:)

Samsung entry level is top notch and dirt cheap, hp is also great.

Stay clear of lexmark for fear of the grabbing 20 pages at once bug grrrrrrrrrr

I have a 1020 and p1005 which are great but i would not recommend the p1005 gives us a bit of trouble in all honesty, sometimes it just does not work and we have to reboot on xp.

Get Smart, Get a Minolta! My MF2800 is ~6years old, never troubles and prints ~ 3-5k per catridge

What do the toners go for on these printers? I always shy away when I see the > R1k price tags..

Busy testing out a Lexmark entry level, E120n. Toner on cartridge exchange is about R800, yield 2000 pages, = 4c / page. Compared to injkets, typically 70c / page.

No problems thus far (n = network model) and works with Vista 64Bit. Watch out for OS support when you get a printer.

Had an entry Minolta QMS PagePro 1100L before that, piece of rubish, as Minolta support when it came to driver updates with this particular model was non-existent, it constantly crashed the printer spooling, pain in the butt and their Tech support could have informed me that the model was recalled.

Canon have a very long turn around time (waited over a month for a customers warranty return) when it comes to repairs (in Durban anyway). Eventually my supplier exchanged with a model up after I kicked up a fuss.

Thanks guys :) Where did you guys get the printers from? I've checked around and don't see any of the models listed on most websites :(

Makro - normally have the best prices for HP printers.

I have the 2550 colour laser; around 3/4 years.

Just got a quote to replace the drum - R2070.

Should be 40c /page, not 4c

So it is 40c. My bad, thought that looked a bit wierd but anway.

Would not touch HP with a 50 foot barge poll trying to get them fixed sucks big time, tear a skin in the fuser unit and see what happens, they are happy to sell you something new, now there's commitment to being green, mountains of printers, next to the mountains of notebooks and printers, as they sing all things bright and beautiful, while having a fat laugh - the laser carts are a pig to re-fill - get a Samsung with a non chiped cartridge or one of the Xerox lasers like the one that is a re-boxed Samsung and sells for about R600 - the cartridge is very easy to fill
