The thread of grant's escapades into DBN (I think) curry and the recent best curry in CT thread have me longing for a nice curry/bunny chow.

Please offer suggestions as to where the best curries can be found in and around JHB and by extension the rest of GP. I'm pretty close to Fordsburg (15 min drive) and drive through it on my daily commute. The smell of spices lingering in the air there makes my mouth water.

Type of curries in terms of style I'm looking for include, chicken, mutton and vegetarian. In terms of heat, I'm looking for curries that range between, slight twitch on the taste buds to lava squirter.

Make your own...

A good curry is easy to make...

Oooo man I can't find a good Durban style curry place around JHB :( Northern is nice but I am a Durbanite

Durban style would be curry and all just behind the Shell at the corner of rivonia and south roads. Also Curry Leaf at the Buccleuch centre

I second both of these for Durban style

Fordsburg side I saw a place at the corner of Church and Bartlett advertising Durban style but haven't tried them yet.

Depends if you are Northern or Southern, defines what types of curries you grew up with. Fordsburg good for Northern food mainly.

Lugz, Canterbury Crossing on Bram Fischer in Randburg is meant to be quite good

It's not so much the recipe, it's the ingredients. If you get kark ingredients from a local PnP then you will end up with a kark curry. My mum gets hers in Durbs whenever she heads that way... :D

I suppose living in DBN I don't notice that.... I just get the right ingredients all the time :D

I quite enjoyed the curries I had in Fordsburg. Eating with my hands was a new experience though. I will make a point of visiting your suggested places.

As for making your own, I second that. I also second the fact that the quality of ingredients is crucial. You also have to take your time. A rushed curry is a waste.

In the fourways area there is Cyber Curries at the Buzz (corner Douglas and Witkoppen). I think its the same family that runs the Blue lagoon so very Durban style curry that is very good.

Curry is easy.

Take some meat and brown it with some onions.

Get a plant crop that produces and reduces into a lot of liquid, add some cream and/or coconut milk to it. And add some some curry paste and/or powder and meaty stock to it.

A few other extra "menial" ;) spices are also need.

  • If you are going into the whole business of toasting your spices ... then please do.

Cook it for a reasonable amount of time ... as long as possible without overheating or burning it.

Serve it on some extra cooked vegetables or if you are not dieting ... cous-cous or rice.

EDIT: I also make a delicious tomato-based chicken curry. Same principle applies.
