Best curry in GP?

+1 for Curry Palace in Ferndale.

Sitar in Cresta is awesome for a more upmarket experience - ask for the Vindaloo "Indian hot", it's an interesting experience, honestly the hottest curry I've ever had.

Their modus operandi is quite simple - curry 1, make a sort of Indian dish, throw in a bag of castor sugar, serve.
curry 2, repeat with a slightly different spice base, throw in another bag of castor sugar, serve

and so forth

Oh dear, had no idea there was sugar in them. Maybe that's why they seemed so tasty. That's quite a shocker for anyone who's insulin resistant/diabetic.

You can't taste the sweetness?
Sugar is a common ingredient in many currys, not only with them
Next time you there ask them which of their dishes are unsweetened.

I'm aware that sugar is considered to add a certain amount of "depth" to the flavour. However, stating that the restaurant is adding a bag of sugar to a pot of food, seems a bit much.

They used to have a small shop just off the highway as you drive to fordsburg. Every time I was in the area I had to stop for their curry. Alas a new owner took over and it was no more!
 
A few guys at work just tried out a variety of bunnies from Currylicious in Randburg. I had the chicken and it was tasty and all. The gravy was a bit much, soaking the bread a bit too far. Also would've liked to be given a choice of boneless or not. Definitely strikes me as a "debben" style curry, with a heat factor around 7/10, which is perfect for the cold weather :D

Does it count as the "Best curry in GP"? I'd need to rate their breyani first, but the bunny chow was decent, if not "wow".

Had some really good curry at this place called spiceburg.
They have just opened in Midrand, but I see they also have a Greenside branch.
I have eaten from various different curry places and this was easily in the top 3.
I don't know if I was there on a good day, so will have to try them again next week, but portions and flavours were outstanding, and well priced.
My wife bought takeaway so I don't know if there is any ambiance in the restaurant, but alas as they have taken over what was the awful taste of India premises, I doubt that the actual restaurant is worth writing home about, but their food, completely different story. Thank goodness not as sweet as Curry Palace or Ghazals, so the cardamon and other spices were really coming through.

Couple years back used to get the most yummy authentic corner shop biryani at a place in Juta st, Braamfontein, but alas streetview tells of its demise.

edit: looks like they had a revamp but still there, in De Korte, lol

Recently discovered Chilli Pickle in Jhb South opposite The Glen. Awesome north Indian curries...
 
Avoid Thava in Norwood if you a person of non Caucasian persuasion. It's highly rated, but not suitable for an Asian palette .

Avoid also applies to Midrand thava, just not so great, though I hear Norwood is better. Whats the Asian palette prefer?
 
I see by Benmore gardens a place opening called 1860 being opened. Durban style! Will let you know once it opens what it is like :twisted:

Everything was a bit sweet in my opinion.

So maybe I misspoke....as Saffer indians tend to like their sweet and sour flavours mixed. I don't dig it so much...prefer my curries defined by spices as opposed to sugar. Also, spicy doesn't mean hot and vice versa....in SA spicy has a chilli hot connotation to it
