Best fighter jet?

Eurofighter as an added option/opponent? Not too sure about its vital statistics, but its meant to be right up there...

Strange how nobody is even mentioning the outgoing F-15 which is designed to keep and endure air superiority. She may be old, but is probable the USA most capable dogfighter.

And you wonder why the US will not export the F-22. They know its good and to keep the advantage they will not allow it to be used by anyone else.

F-35 however...

A possibility yes, I don't know much about European fighter aircraft, but she is more or less in line with the F-18. The thing with multirole aircraft is their armament, primary roll being air-to-air and secondary being air-to-ground, so you either weight her down or lighten her up pending on the role and mission purpose, or alternatively dump (or early execute) load under critical conditions. Great dogfighter... pend on the flight roster ;)

You unpatriotic fools... The cheetah will cream the lot of them....

What’s this about anti-aircraft fodder? :p

Did it ever intercept MiG's in the Border War, no? Imagine it downed a MiG, Denel would had been rich selling posters. It is actually a shame that it was short-lived.

However the Rooivalk is equipped to down interceptors, the Mistral is one of the best missiles able to reject flares, the helicopter launcher is uniquely adopted to appropriately fire this missile in air. Then again the Rooivalk have never seen air-to-air combat…

Personal opinion, I wouldn't advise any fixed-wing aircraft to engage an advanced attack/combat helicopter in a dogfight.

Was just about to say. The others don't even have an aircon...

Yeah all they've got are missiles, high caliber machine guns, a jet engine and the ability to fart flames!!! But yeah it will probably still lose to the Monza:D

The fixed wing aircraft would have to lock on from a distance and try shoot down the helicopter from there. The other issue is height and speed, the helicopter can travel at a speed that will stall the jet like crazy :-). There used to be an old dogfighting game called Dogfight where you could literally dogfight anything, try an F18 vs a Spitfire :-)

mmmm... the reason the cheetah never intercepted a mig in the bush war, is because it was not in existence then..... The cheetah did indeed cream some visiting usaf f-16's and f-15E strike eagles in friendly fights during some USAF visits though...

Let's all be realistic here: A dogfight in today's day and age will never happen as all fighting happens BVR. The jet that will win is the one with the more advanced targeting systems and armament.

However if you want to go into pure theory craft mode, it depends on a large number of factors. Number one being, which jet has the highest amount of energy available to use.

Personally, I'd throw my favourite air superiority fighter in - the F-15 Eagle.

Dogfighting defined is a form of engagement between fighter aircraft; in particular, combat of maneuver at short range, where each side is aware of the other's presence.

This also concludes in my opinion why the F-22 in the OP would not exactly be an amazing dog fighter, once visible to the adversary it is down to skills, the less capable the hardware, the more the pilot needs to push his physical boundaries. The F-22 is designed to come in high at long range, keeping the air superiority at distance.

I must say the F-14 was and still is a sexy girl, especially when she closes her legs :p

In regard with PC games, my all time favourite back in the day was Navy Strike.

None of the Cheetah variants ever saw combat in the Border War, so their performance was never tested against the dominant fighter in the conflict, the MiG-23. The Cheetah Es were used as permanent interceptor aircraft, with a minimum of two aircraft on round-the-clock alert status, until the end of the Border War in 1989.

Nah I didn't like the whole wings moving back thing about it, when it comes to looks I say the F18 is the best. It has that classic fighter jet look you know

The RF-5 "Tigereye" is my favourite American jet fighter, the reconnaissance version. The F-5 also served as the starting point for the F/A-18 design studies. Interestingly though is that the F-5 is still operational today.

SA Gripen, with jet fuel, trained pilots and maintenance.

I kid. I like the sukhoi purely for the wow factor & the flips they can do. Doesn't strike me as particularly useful against missiles but still cool

I wasn't talking about the cheetah E's... they were just modified mirage 3's. The cheetah C/D's were much more advanced than the E's once they were launched. Also, the E's never left SA territory as far as i know during the border war, they were on standby in south africa baes only.

A lot is up to the pilots. Go look at those mock dogfights they have between various airforces of the world (NATO nations where they practice together) and see the outcome of those.
