Greetings.

A friend of mine wants to upgrade her gpu, however she has a low budget.

She is looking at spending MAX R1000 on a GPU. What do you think is the best card she can get at this price point? Secondhand/new, don't really matter...

What does she need it for? Does she game?

If she does not game then she could probably get away with spending MUCH less.

What's up with you guys not stipulating all the info...

What does she want to use the Graphics card for? Does she want to play games, use CUDA, fill out the pc?

Now this may very well be my inner Jew speaking, but isn't this time of year the worst time of year to buy electronics simply because all companies need to make a nice christmas bonus, and they raise the prices 30% and then reduce it by 15%, advertising the "15% off".

If it's not urgent, then buy next month... and supplies of the AMD cards will also increase, which=price droppage.

Yep - ATi's HD4850 is your best bet. I'm keen on getting that one or the 4870 myself...

If you're getting a HD4850, get it fast. Apparently there's none of those cards left in the USA. Probably wont be anything left by next year.

Yes, give some details please:

- what does she want to do with the card? 2D work? 3D gaming? Solataire?
- what does she have at the moment?

No point buying a R1000 video card when the one she might have is a free gift 5870. :D

Definitely 4850 for just over 1k or 4670 for under 1k.

Yeah yeah, sorry for not giving enough info, only came online now too

-Currently has an 8600GT, E5200, 2GB RAM...
-Mainly watches movies/series, plays games like Sims 3, Spore etc. Screen res is 1680x1050

Anything else? :)

I would think that a 8600GT would do the job fine as it is. Those games don't sound like they need much. Movies don't need any sort of power unless you're looking for HD content decoding.

I say recommend she add a 1TB drive instead. :)

I see no need for a new card. Buy a big HD or save the money and get a nice 24" HD Samsung monitor ;)
