Best graphics card to get

4870 try pcint.co.za. 4850 is a LOT better than 9600 really. Cheapest gts250 i've seen is 2k.

The problem with waiting is that they say they only get limited stock in at that price and if you don't order and pay for it, you might not get it. Not sure what to do! BTW, I'm female, not male ... "she" not "he" :) Thanks

well, if you buy from PCInternational, you can get it NOW instead of a month.

Geforce GTS 250
738Mhz 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI TV Edition XFX/Asus
R 1,425 excl. R 1,624 incl.

it's R124 over your budget, but won't break the bank.

the GTS250 is on par with the 4850, and is R200 cheaper too.

The GTS 250 is a re-badged 9800GTX+ (Which is quite a good card hey)

If 512MB RAM isn't enough for you, you can always add 200 bucks and get the 1GB version (worth it IMO)

Yeah that is a good price for the 250 - I'd seriously consider going that way.

yeah the 250 and the 4850 both might have 512mb Vram, but the nVidia has a bigger bus width. that would be canceled out if the ATI had faster ram, but they're both DDR3 unfortunately.
both are good cards, the 250 is just cheaper. (or has double the RAM, if you look at same priced cards)

don't they both have 256bit bus width? 275 has 448bit but gts250 is just a redesigned 9900gtx+. Very little performance difference. Comes down to price and if you prefer red vs green.

How many version of the 4850 are there and why do prices range from 1300 to 3400 ???

Which one would you get.. ?

Well I wouldn't get the force3d tbh. 4850s run hot at the best of times. I have a HIS, very happy with it. Just have to price compare I guess...

ah, sorry - you are right. both are 256. :o

the XFX GTS250 looks cool though.

Hi,

I too am looking at replacing my gfx card and am interested in the cards mentioned above.

My question is this:

What kind of power supply will I need to run on of these babies?

Off the top of my head I have the following components:
Intel board
Q6600
4 gigs ddr2
2 x 80 gig SATA
450W Gigabyte p/s
using onboard sound.

Any advice great appreciated.

I bought a XFX 7900GT a couple of years ago from PcInt but it ran very hot. It finally gave in and because of supply issues they replaced it with a XFX 8600GTS. It came in the same black casing and also ran very hot... finally giving in last December.

So i am a bit unsure of buying XFX again. Thanks for the info on the Force3D 4850 running hot. How bout Innovision GTS250 512 for R1575.12? I can get an Asus GTS250 for R1807. Does the "name" really warrant the price difference?

Jase - both cards need one pci-e six pin cable; I reckon you'd be ok with a 450w if it's Gigabyte.

TB - xfx is generally a good brand. I just had a 7900 go out on me as well.

Afaik the reference boards are identical on gts250 - so the only difference is the cooling system. You might be able to get a faster overclock on the asus i'd guess with the cooler. But you know, you'll probably be fine with the innovision. I'd go for the cheaper one personally. I don't know how hot the force3d's get, but 4850's do run very hot in general so good cooling is recommended. The fans on the force3d look flimsy to me.

In terms of performance: HD4850 or GTS250? Ive looked at TomsHardware charts but their prices arnt realy relevant for us...

Locally It seems that the 250 is going to go over my R1600 budget(slightly for 512mb/R200+ for 1 GIG) but I'll have to wait to the end of June for the 4850...

Thanks for all the info. I think I'm going with the XFX GTS250, I just don't want to wait till end of June! :)

From reading up I also understand that the 250 runs cooler than the 4850. Just sucks that in SA we don't get the double lifetime warranty given by XFX in the US....

Have a look at the Force3D HD4870 as well. It's below R2000 from Prophecy has the DHT Freezer Cooler on it. Mine auto-overclocked with the ATI Overdive software to 790/1090 from 750/900 standard and temps have never gone above 64 degrees on max load. The cooler is whisper quite. I had to check to see if the fan was actually spinning at first :)
I can probably push the overclock further but it's ok for now especially with my lowish 460W power supply.

The Force3D HD4850 is the one that suffers from the heat and noise issues.

The Force3D HD4870X2 is the one that suffers from the heat and noise issues.

Fixed ?

your card goes to 64 degrees on full load you say? man... my X2 Idles at that temperature :D

And noise? well If i put the fan up to 100% it sounds like a Uno Turbo Driving through my room :p

the 4850 doesn't suffer heat problems, trust me.
