Best IT certifications

Hmm, im get my CISA (Certified Information System Auditor) qualification soon. CISSP would probably be next...

I picked the right certification!! Yay!! I am busy with my MCITP for Server 2008 now. :)

I also think the LPI certifications for Linux are great and something that I would like to do.

However, I have used linux for years but just dont see as much value in doing a certification as oppose to a Cisco or M$ one. It all boils down to o/s market share and what potential skill set employers are looking for to make yourself marketable. Also vendors need certified people to get partnership status and I dont see this happening in the Linux world.

I suppose its just the industry IT people are in but you are continually chasing your tail getting certified on the latest technology every 4-5 years or so. I think Linux certifications could potentially have a longer life span of maybe 10 years.

I dont really like the fact that industry dictates what certifications you need to have to work on their technology but I guess it is a hole that had to be plugged between tertiary education and what skills employers need. I resisted this necessary evil in certification for many years but eventually succome to it and got myself certified on M$ products to remain marketable, it has not however made me a better engineer - it just proves I can do what I say I can!

Very useful article, just can't really be a top 10 without mentioning the word Java. Maybe top 10 non-java certs :P

Its cool that someone went through all these other certificates and found a few good ones that people can look at. I know a couple of people that have looked at lists of certificates and been very confused about that to do, so thanks :) Next time add java ;)

Quite frankly I would hire a bright teachable graduate before I hire somebody with a certification for the role of software developer. Why?

  • Certifications become outdated
  • Certifications teach and bind you proprietry practices of a product. eg. Putting all your code on a Windows Form or Aspx page because you can just drag and drop components onto it.
  • I've interviewed very expensive senior certified guys that can't answer basic object orientated theory
  • Many certified guys think they know everything and aren't teachable
  • Certified guys are expensive

I'm generalising here with the above list, so if you're certified and don't fit the above description, please don't be offended.

Suffice to say that for every 10 senior guys we interview (many of them certified with some MS****, we hire 1 because of the above reasons.

The article does specifically mention certifications that aren't "ultra-specialist". Java certifications would fall in to that category. :)
