Best IT certifications

I recon this whole subject is a little off, simply because every argument goes both ways. I've seen many guys with degrees failing to make the cut and I've also seen many guys with certifications failing to make the cut. In fact, if I have to quote from experience and comment on the stuff up's that had to be fixed, I can honestly say the biggest stuff ups were made by the guys with degrees. Personally though, I'd still favour the guy with the degree, I'd just make the selection process for job applicants a little tougher.

These certs are good for people who don't mind making R10k pm which can't get you anything.

Anyone thinking of gunning for the articles mentioned courses, should really check out Torque-IT's MNE course, its a year long, but you do A+,N+,Linux+,MCSE and Cisco ICND1 (Do ICND2 afterwards and become a CCNA).

Some might say the money isnt there, you need to aquire xp in order to cash in on those qualifications, BUT, work is APLENTY, so you will be starting your career in no time.

Obviously one should not argue against getting a degree, it provides you with the best training possible, im just saying, if you can get 4 years relevant experience at a cert based job, you will be banking with a platinum card in no time.

Yeah given the right candidate, a degree is most certainly the way to go. But, like we all know it's not always an option for everyone. So value for money should really be the consideration. Banking with a platinum card is available to most who are willing to put in the effort to get there ;)

I can say that the certifications make you much more employable, especially the M$ ones. I do agree that they don't mean much in terms of what you know, but they do give your company tons of free licensing if they have enough certified people. We are now Gold certified and I don't think we pay for any windows / office / visual studio / sql server licenses.

I myself went to CTI (very big mistake, but it did get my foot in the door) and I've got a few certifications behind my name. Started doing a part time BSc Computer Science and IT degree at UNISA this year. I'm also planning on writing the SQL Server 2008 Developer certi in the next two weeks.

Why was CTI a big mistake? What would be a better alternative?

It looks like this is my plan:
BSC Comp Science degree at whatever university (Unisa or Wits)
Get some entry level experience on the job while studying for certs

Hehe he eh !!! Whats the use you have all these nice Certificates with Zero Experience , sucks hey,Still you wont find a decent market related salary job,
beats me , best i guess is A+ N+ Mcse , Save up your other study monies

Please read the "why you should not go to CTI thread"

Any South African university is better than CTI, and if you can't afford to go to a university or can't go to university because you work during the day, UNISA is still a lot better than CTI.

I can guarantee you that employers will look more favourable at an applicant with a UNISA degree than a person with a CTI certificate.

If anyone is doing the BSC computer science at Unisa next year please let me know.

I have started doing my Bcom Informatics degree in July at UNISA but only registered for 4 modules will be registering for the rest of the first year modules next year.

UNISA school of computing forums with a very social forum as well.

Thanks for the Lols. I always love listening to the degree guys go on about how they know the "theory" behind it all and that cert guys don't know anything.

As Lazy said, it's all about the experience. Cert/Degree is irrelevant except to help you get your foot in the door.

But keep up with all that book learning.

Tried searching but can't find it. Anyone have a link, or perhaps know who the author is?
