Best Netbooks

I definitely think the Samsung NC10 should be included in this review. (The white version) ... its specs are high for its class and price.

I have a Asus 701/4G, upgraded it to 2 GB ram and bought an external 500 MB HDD :)

It almost fainted the first time that I plugged it in, it never knew that there where HDD's that big, lol.

500 MB??? Where on God's green earth did you find a 500 MB HD?

I myself like the Dell Mini.

Lenovo S10

I used one of these recently and was surprised - 1Gb Ram, 102Gb HDD, good performer and the US guys are paying $300 for them... in SA the price is R3900 ish... why?

In J-Bay, anything beyond 40Gb is big ne?
Lol - I think you meant 500Gb... and yes, there are alot bigger

Hi guys,

A few months ago in the hardware bargain forum there was an excellent deal on an Acer Aspire One, 120gb linux version for under R2200. Tried searching for the link or store, can anybody help me out? Thanks.

Netbook review fail, strange how every other review of netbooks rates the NC10 as tops, and its not even listed here.... research is normal a good idea....

I recently received my Akihabara purchased NEC VersaPro UltraLite Type VS notebook, aimed at high end business users. I'm really chuffed with it.

Correct Specs:
Intel Atom 1.86GHz
GMA 500 graphics (can do 1080p h.264 decoding with the right drivers)
1GB RAM
64GB Toshiba SSD
10.6" 1280 by 768 screen
3 USB ports
Tracking stick (like on the IBM/Lenovos) and 3 buttons
Kensington Lock
SD card reader
Very thin! 15.8mm thin!
Weight is 750g
Withstands a weight of 150kg
Drop tested for 78cm (desk height)
Windows XP or Vista (mine is XP)
Battery life - standard battery 4h, extended battery - 8h

Incredible build quality. I am very happy, but then again it is NEC, an old time Japanese company enjoying a good reputation in the Japanese domestic market. The thing is silver magnesium alloy and because the Japanese subway/train system in places like Tokyo is so busy that people squeeze in like sardines, a Japanese business netbook/laptop has to be able to handle 100-150kg weight. My Panasonic CF-Y7 enjoys the same sort of domestic market Japanese quality and likewise can handle such drops and pressure of 100kg. I don't think the NEC is waterproof like the Panasonic though. The machine is very thin, less than a cm (the surface you type on) but it feels rock solid like a plank of steel. No flexibility at all. Assembled in Japan. This netbook is also fanless, I'm not sure if it's a relatively new feature or an established one, but it definately feels strange to hold a light notebook silent notebook.

People wanting to purchase such a netbook can do so via conics.net, mine was purchased in an Akihabara NEC outlet.

:erm: It's R10,000 at the current exchange rate excluding import duties and really has no bearing on this discussion or topic, other than satisfying your fetish for obscure japanese products and other things. :)

Ummm I paid $900 - so R7200.

A netbook with a 64GB SSD in SA will cost even more (>R10K), as will an Atom 1.86 GHz CPU, but you won't get the build quality of a NEC machine. Honestly you do pay for quality
and this thing performs very well too.

Keep that in mind, ne :).

This review hardly cuts it. Why choose to cover the toyish Asus EeePC 7-inch when Asus have the brilliant 8.9" & 10" models which are the real deal ?

Congrats on your Nifty NEC there PeterCH. Besides external video output, I'm a little surprised it does'nt include HSDPA connectivity at the price.

I'm looking excitedly toward the Asus T91 which has all the standard EeePC netbook specs, but with 8.9" swivel touchscreen to boot as well as onboard HSDPA as option.

Our office just got the 11.2" Acer Aspire One with HSUPA. We use it for our support laptop.

Was really awesome installing it and giving it a test. At R6K it is not overpriced as it has a normal form factor keyboard. Compare it to what you can get for R6K this netbook is awesome. Will save up to get this one for myself.

My current Netbook is the 8.9" AAO and I love it still. Its just so handy and at R2K now there affordable.

Problem with R2k AAO is that slow, hanging 8gb ssd. It just drove me crazy, had to get rid of it before I pulled out all my hair. I'm one of those guys that just don't look good bald lol! :p
