Hi guys,

I am looking at starting a home based business selling both products and services. Any ideas on which open-source accounting software I could use without any or small hassles.

I have done some research and found TurboCash and GNUCash as possible solutions. I am still doing research and open to any advice.

Which one do you recommend?

I've looked at TC & GNUCash (the only real options it seems) for my wifes small business and we instead are forking out the cash for Pastel (R1600 for single user, multi company if you shop around). One thing to keep in mind about Pastel vs all the other (free & paid) is the reduced costs of ownership. Due to the high uptake of it in the industry, its easier & cheaper to get bookeepers & auditors to work on your books.

Pastel pretty much has a stanglehold on the SA accounting market for SME's, small business and so on. From an IT side I hate Pastel products, but I know the accountants love it because it just works and works well for them. Phoronix had a small article up talking about open source accounting software, and for a Linux/FOSS site, they were not impressed with the options out there, specifically GNUCash.

TurboCash is the best of the free lot and very well supported. It started out in South Africa so is very good for local users.
