Which ones are currently the best open source Linux packages for web based email integrating with sendmail? So far I've looked at RoundCube, SquirrelMail and Scalix. Please, give me some more idea of other tried and tested packages.

Horde.
Feature rich and reliable. RoundCube and SquirreMail are horrible.
I've looked at Horde some years ago and at that stage it was a horrible package to get it working. May be it's less buggy these days but I'm looking for something more lightweight.
I would go with Atmail Opensource edition.

Even Plesk moved over from Horde to Atmail, that should tell you something.

If you are including full email solutions, which include the smtp server etc, Zimbra OSS is pretty cool. I find the features very full, and it is better looking than Horde.
Horde's the way to go been using it since 2006 ......and light weight as well ...with many goodies .....
RoundCube is HORRIBLE!!!
