Best Openweb Gold uncapped backbone in Cape Town

After a year of trying to convince my house mate to cancel our 4mb Afrihost uncapped account so we can get a new ISP (and a proper uncapped account), as we have been throttled since day one (1 Jan 2011) on Afrihost, he has finally agreed. So, at the end of this month we are upgrading to a 4mb gold uncapped product from Openweb. Now, i dont want him to regret changing over, so if I could get some advice on which backbone to be asked to get put on? During the day, he runs his bussiness from here, so browsing, skype, email all need to run smoothly (Right now, we get around 0.8mb during office hours). I get home from lectures in the evening and use the web for online radio, soundcloud, youtube, torrents and news groups. We usually only do downloads at night, after 11.00PM We stay in the southern suburbs in Cape Town and are on a 10mb line. We get a solid 8mb on it, so the line is not a problem. Any advice would be great!

Thing is, you can swap around to suit your needs, so test away.
 
Sweet! So you mean Openweb doesn't mind you swapping around abit? Is VB data center in Cape Town?

Correct. With OW Gold you get the "swap backbones" bit.
VB offers amazing speeds on business protocols during the day. Can't remember having issues with Skype/FTP/Http on it.
Although, torrents is a no-no on it - it's blocked almost completely, even at night.
I was able to stream audio-sources/Youtube at amazing speeds on it.

VB is n Johannesburg but you will get the same speeds/latencies at both locations.

My Pta-London pings were 180ms and Pta-Cape Town around 40ms or so.

I say try VB first. They don't like torrents though.

After that IS. Then maybe dsl heaven.
 
Okay, that sounds good. How often can you change back bones? Like everyday, or is it a process that you have to email and ask to be changed? Because most of my downloads are torrents!

I'd recommend only changing once a month as all backbones have their ups and downs. A month is enough to properly see what a backbone is all about.
 
Ja, a bit worried about DSL Heaven, havn't heard many good stories about WebAfrica lately... But i will give them a go!

If you want decent performance out of torrents, take a look at a seedbox... really worth the investment.
Change backbones as the need arises (due to technical issues)... you email support and they help you out.

DSL-H is usually fine but lately WebAfrica have been having some network issues.
IS is generally a nice network but I haven't spent all that much time on it.
