Best performance/gaming laptop for <17k?

Need help buying a new laptop, needs to be fast and not more than 17k also what is the best place to shop for laptops?

Agreed, I have a Toshiba i7, 17inch monster for which I paid just under R18K a bit more than a year back..... in Hong Kong
 
OP, I would suggest looking through my Laptop Buyer's Guide from last month for ideas. Personally, with that kind of money, there's only a few models I'd be looking at:

AKill 170 17.3" @ R16,999
Proline P150E 15.6" @ R15,189 (SSD Upgrade: ADATA SX300 mSATA 256GB @ R3262)

Choosing between either system would be hard for me. The AKill 170 is fully upgradeable, even down to the CPU and GPU and it has extra storage upgrade options so in terms of longevity and flexibility, the 170 might be the better bet. The P150E is basically just a smaller version of the 170 (and because its smaller and lighter, would be my first choice) - the only drawback is the lack of an extra drive bay. Because its also cheaper, you can shove in a larger mSATA SSD and boot from that, using the 1TB drive for storing media and stuff you don't need loaded at super-fast speeds.

In terms of gaming performance, the ASUS G55VW you looked at would trail behind both systems in terms of gaming performance and flexibility. The only other pre-built contender is MSI's GT60, which would equal both laptops here in performance. Alienware is no longer an option anymore, as Dell launched the local version of the Alienware ordering site that also somehow artificially pushed up prices. Now you'll be paying, on average, ten grand more for only slightly better build quality and, in most cases, less performance.

Well my desktop got hit by lightning and insurance is paying me around 20k for it (the thing is destroyed). I am currently studying at the university of Pretoria but live in JHB so i want something I can take back and forth as well as to library etc...

Both of the laptops look good in tearms of their specs but I've tried to stay away from brands like proline as their products just seem to lack quality such as in the feel of keyboard and the materials its made of etc. However I will take a look at it, thanks for the help.
 
A purchased a Asus N75SF last Oct11... Still playing all games like a dream... 640Gig HDD and 256SSD... total price then was R13 500..

I agree with this. It will also affect screen quality.

I wouldnt buy anything that isnt a known brand - ie Acer, Asus, Lenovo, Dell, HP etc.
 
That Proline looks like it is a Clevo P150EM which will take up to a Nvidia GT680 or AMD 7970 GPU but they just not offering it.
32GB mSATA LOL....what you gonna do with that.
Other places you get more config choices eg here

That AKill 170 is a Clevo P170EM - the 17inch
