Best prices on X-BOX

OK now that I have narrowed my decision , I have decided on the X-Box 360 , but where can I get one for a descent price and would you suggest getting the basic or the "higher spec" version ?

I suggest that you get the Pro Console. It is a better package that the Arcade.
 
I have a brand new Arcade available and will be getting a 60GB Pro next week at a decent price.

If you have no intention of using Xbox Live, then the Arcade (basic) model is fine.

For more storage, component cable (HD) and Xbox Live connectivity, the Pro is a better bet.

@Phreakboy ... the PS2 is old tech. New titles are being churned out for the next-gen consoles on an annual basis. PS2 will be phased out sooner than you think!

Unless you're into older titles (a wide variety of PS2 titles are available on the second hand market due to it's large game library). New PS2 titles are only slightly cheaper than its next-gen cousins :D

The Xbox 360 also has a good pre-played market in SA. You can catch up within reasonable means for all the good games available.

Did you mean PS3 there? PS2 and Xbox360 is in totally different leagues. PS2 is like 10 years old already, games are dirt cheap, the console itself is dirt cheap...but graphics suck, and basically mostly old games.

As for the Xbox Models:

The main thing with the Arcade is it comes without an internal HardDrive and you'll need to use those little memory slots to save games [exactly like a PS2] . You CAN however buy the harddrive at any time and slot it in...

The other models [Pro/Elite] comes with an internal HD , but then it's about the size. I believe it's 60GB and 120GB respectively now. I see no reason to pay a premium for the larger drive, so here's where the Pro is basically the "bread and butter" version. The elite comes with some other optional goodies , which you can always buy seperately when you actually need it [you can buy the larger HD seperately too].

Just make sure what exactly is in the total package though. Wireless Controllers are like R500-R600 each, and most Xbox packages only come with 1 controller. So this can make the price looks -significantly- different, especially if you actually want 2 controllers......

Finally also check on the High Definition abilities of the particular model, there were models that didn't have High-Def supports, but i think the new models should all be High-Def now [whether your TV/Screen support it or not is another story]

In the end, comparing PS3 vs. Xbox 360 .

Xbox 360 got the largest selection of games and also the most people got Xboxes [sales can prove that] . This alone means :You'll have a larger market , more 2nd hand games and more specials on Xbox titles.

The price of games between Xbox 360 and PS3 is generally identical ON RELEASE DATE. However i see Xbox titles go into specials/bargains/classics/platinum much sooner or at least it's more easily available....simply because more people buy it (economy of scale is the term here).

As for the consoles themselves, PS3 is definitely better geared for "other" stuff like Music and Movies...it does have a blue-ray drive afterall. So if you're into the whole media-center thing, PS3 might take you a little further. Xbox only have a normal DVD drive, but it can play movies and music from a HD just fine....so other than the BlueRay drive i wouldn't say it's -that- far behind in terms of MEdia abilities.

I can't say much about PS3's online services, but i believe it's properly supported in South Africa at least [local downloads for starters]. Xbox 360's online content aka "Xbox Live" is NOT actually supported in South Africa, you need to jump through a few hoops to subscribe to the gold content. That said it's generally been mentioned that Sony's Online Service is not as good as Microsoft's [Xbox Live] , but in South Africa it can be a case of having something from Sony SA or nothing because Microsoft SA seems to be a bunch of slackers with this.


Anyhow just my few cents ;)

Thanks for both sets of advice.

I was comparing PS2 to Xbox. As I can get the PS2 brand new with 2 remotes, WWE vs Raw '09 and Porsche Challenge for R2000. So the price vs value seems good. I could have a fully functioning gaming station for less than R2000 and then pick up the games for dirt cheap.

Console would probably end up being the domain of my 4 yr old son :D

Well for casual gaming, PS2 is pretty decent and good value for money. Even the games in the stores are easily found for under R200 as opposed to R700 a pop for Xbox 360 games.

PS: If you were talking about the Xbox 1 [the one before Xbox 360] vs. Ps2. Then i can tell you now, PS2 all the way. Xbox 1 was Microsoft's first attempt and it did not -really- take off as big as the Xbox 360 did and was absolutely dwarved by the PS2....

However if you're more serious and wanted to get the latest and greatest games people are talking about, PS2 won't help you.

Nah, I was comparing PS2 vs Xbox 360. I sent Maestro a PM regarding prices on the Xbox, but as explained it would be for the son and I. I play most of my new games on my PC.

I'm in the same boat here. I need to decide between a PS2 & X-Box Arcade for my 7yr old son. I'm totally clueless so any advice would be great.
 
It's pretty simple for kids that age. Get a XBox 360 Arcade. There's plenty of games for kids in that age group. My one nephew has a PS3 and the other an XBox 360. The kid with the PS3 worries his parents for an XBox 360.

And don't forget that the picture/graphics quality on the XBox 360 is much superior than the PS2. And 6-12 month old games are the same price as PS2 games that have been out just as long:)

It's been negated somewhat with the improved manufacturing process.

Most retailers are stocking the Jasper models at the moment. Its the best revision so far.

I've opened one of these models and I'm quite impressed by the die-shrink, cooling system and the fact it draws less power than it predecessors.
It's also extremely quiet, which was a pain for Xbox 360 owners of previously manufactured units.

Remember to store your proof of payment in a safe place. You get a 3 year warranty from Microsoft against RROD (Red Ring Of Death) and E74 (GPU failure).

I asked this in the xbox faq but no one replied. With the jasper arcades, what happens if it RRoD's. How do you get your save games off the internal memory? Do MI Digital have a way to deal with this?

Interesting question you have there. Well since we're talking about MI Digital here I guess the short answer is no. The onboard memory is focused more on the NXE update and I guess they expect that it's the clients' responsibility to buy external storage may it be HDD or memory card even though the onboard memory can store game saves.

IMO the integrated storage memory is a good idea but they should have kept the memory card for the above mentioned situation or for carry over Live profile to your friends house.

Since we're on the topic I also have a question. The Arcade bundle has a picture on the side of the box showing the contents (Xbox + Arcade Games + Memory Card,etc.). Does the Jasper Arcade box also show the same pic even though the memory is integrated and actually does not include the mem card? (which would make it piss easy to identify a Jasper in the shops)
 
It's an Arcade model so it should come with a memory card bundled.

Incredible at Gateway has some Elite bundles for R3500:eek:
