I'm planning to upgrade my laptop to Win7 ultimate but would like to make a mirror copy of my C drive to restore to orriginal setup in case something goes wrong.

Currently running Vista home and have to many programs/updates running to mess it up and to start from scratch.

Any help and advise will be appreciated. Do not have that much faith in Vista to use the build in backup and restore .

Try Acronis True Image.
It is reasonably priced and works well.

What are you backing up onto?

Stupid question. Will it work properly if I make a copy of the same disk on which Acronis will be installed?

Why not boot your PC into Windows recovery mode (Boot off the Windows Vista / 7 disc and select recovery) and use imagex/gimagex ... both free and legal and you will be compressing to the same format as what Windows came in (wim files)

Acronis True Image 2010 - all you need... you will have two options in Acronis. First is to make the image while running Windows operating system. The second would be to boot the PC using the Acronis rescue disk that you make - this allows you to boot into an environment where the operating system is not loaded, and will give you a full image without the possibility of errors - both will work well, but I always use the second method.
