Hello

Was wondering what software everybody is using as a Media Centre for the PS3?

A quick Google led to me to Media Centre X from Redkawa. I have installed this at home and although my PS3 picks it up I cant seem to find any of my videos, music etc through it

Am I able to stream video content (eg mpg) directly from the PC or does it have to be converted to a PS3 format and then copied to the PS3 Hard Drive or once converted can it stream from the PC hard drive?

thanks

PS3 media server is great (free download), so is WMP.

The PS3 media server allow browsing of PC shared files from PS3.
WMP streams everything compatible in the library folders

The best that I've used is "PS3 Media Server"
(google search will return the address in the first link from blogspot)

Just share whichever folders you like in the Sharing tab.

Then whenever you want to use it, just turn on the PS3 and run the application.

(May need to hit "Restart HTTP Server" button if the PS3 and the computer don't see eachother initially)

Tried this one over the weekend too

I was able to get the program to see my PS3 and for the program to show up in my PS3

I also shared my folders in the sharing tab of the application but when trying to browse for video's on my PC to watch the search's always come up empty

If I share say a folder called "Entertainment" should I then be able to see a folder with this name on the PS3 as all I can see now is folders like 'Video", "Music" etc

On another note if I browse via my internet browser on my PC to the Media Server when I try to view and MPG I get an error message along the lines of Unauthorized Access? Haven't had to time to investigate this further yet

Can this application stream MPG and AVI on the PC to the PS3 or do I need to convert these files into a compatable format?

I've been using tversity for about a year. I've had some issues with it on the ps3 (never actually occured to me to use it on the wii). I found that some movies it reads as 1 channel sound, then there is no audio at all. I couldn't find a fix. It comes back to codec problems, but theyre a bitch to fix.

I installed Ps3 Media Server (PMS) over the weekend and it seems alot simpler. I like the fact that it shares the drive without having to index it the whole time.
Which means I can unpack someting and its available, in tversity I would have to go and refresh the Movie folder in the library, and this can take up to 5 minuets.
Or I can share it seperatly, but thats just messy.

Another thing I like in PMS over Tvercity is it gives more control from the ps3. If a movie isn't playing right, you can just choose the transcode option in the same folder as the movie.

I have only watched 3 or 4 movies on it so far but overall it seems better for the ps3 than tversity.

You should see on the ps3 under Video, Music or Photo and under the title "Search for media servers" any active media servers available like the server "name" you gave WMP server or/and "PS3 media server" or/and "Tversity", etc.

Then when you enter PS3 media server then you can browse your computer files and directories for playable media.

If you do not see the servers you have a setup problem.

"PS3 media server" works on Xbox too I believe! :D maybe also then on the wii?

Just upgraded to Windows Media Player 11 and got this working like a charm :->

Good, now get the "PS3 Media Server" to work and you will note it is 100% better even and do some transcoding too. :D

Will do

I can also see the PS3 Media Server on the PS3 so am pretty sure its setup too

Just need to play around with it a bit

Was having hassles with some of my Karaoke MPG's which WMP couldn't play, will see if the PS3 Media Server does better

How does the interface look on the ps3 when using media server? Just a basic browse by folder setup or can you add stuff like covers/backdrops etc.? Can one stream HD movies with DTS sound from PC and have the ps3 output it as is to tv and amp? (with 6 channel dts sound via optical/hdmi?)

The interface - basic folder browsing
Yes, HD streaming seems to work flawlessly

One should also keep in mind that if one's using a wireless setup, signal strength is a big determining factor in the quality of the stream.

if the signal is weak will the stream stutter or will it refuse to play? just interested as the router is downstairs and the ps3 will be upstairs if i get one.

It is better to get a wireless 1Gig N series router and Wireless N receiver.
The standard e.g. netgear wireles 108mbs just stutters badly during streaming. Wired is then better and cheaper.

Or this solution

Other solutions? Happy hunting

Once I have played around with it a bit more I will let you know

From what I have seen so far on PS3 side it just looks like basic browse by folder under Video, Photo and Music and choose what you want to look, listen too and watch respectively

Seem to be a allot though that you can configure on the software side on the PC though
