Just looking for some advice here.

We want to get a TV in the bedroom upstairs, linking it to the DSTV downstairs in the lounge so that it shares the same feed isn't an option for the wife, I'm also not keen on the extra decoder and extra view option either since we are getting fibre shortly and we've got a Netflix subscription that we have access to also. So I thought the best option would be a TV with some kind of box and from there watch things through the Dstv Now, Showmax and Netflix apps?

This box would need to be able to connect via wifi and be fairly easy for her to operate.

Suggestions please!

Either go for the Xiaomi Mi Box, or get a Smart TV that has that apps already built into the TV.

I've read that the UI on some smart TV's isn't great and after a while they end up slow and laggy because there isn't a lot of support?

In any case, a basic TV with a box will be fine, I don't want to go out and spend the extra cash for a proper smart TV if I can avoid it.

I prefer the Smart TV interface (Samsung Tizen 2016/2017+). I haven't tried the other brands, but I rather use the TV direct.

As for the box, I'd take the Telkom LIT over the Xiaomi Mi... It's cheaper, 2 x USB ports and Ethernet.

The issue you'll have is finding one...

If you're getting a new Samsung, LG or even certain Hisense models, you don't need the box.
My Samsung NU7100 does everything you mentioned and handles 4k content flawlessly.

As far as boxes are concerned, both already mentioned in this thread are good.
Just DON'T go for the Skyworth Binge because of the lower price.
You will regret it...

Nothing wrong with skyworth bud imo as I'm using it at the moment.. Except it doesn't have the Netflix app, which you are advised of before buying it.. DSTV now and showmax work perfectly..also a breeze to set up and connecting to Bluetooth sound bar works nicely

Xiaomi Mi Box is a hit and miss affair.

Some people love it others hate it. I am of the latter. eg DStv Now app runs seamlessly on my phone, iPad, laptop and SO's laptop. On the Xiaomi Mi Box, SD looks terrible and HD buffers constantly. I was on a 10 mbps line at time of testing.

That was more than likely a Wi-Fi issue.

A Xiaomi Mi Box wi-fi issue...otherwise it makes no sense. I don't use ethernet cable on any of my devices.
It doesn't like older routers or being connected to 2.4GHz.

If you have a 5GHz ac router it is nothing but a delight.

Router is a year or so old. No other device in my home suffers from wi-fi issues.
But yes I agree, I've read a ton of people complain about the Wi-Fi but for me personally on my Mi Box the network speed is almost 100Mbps.

Which router is it?

Is something really not discontinued if you can't buy it, are they waiting for a shipment or?

Something can be active and available (not discontinued) - but not available to buy because of various issues like high demand etc. But in this case, they're just waiting for a shipment ....
