Thinking of replacing my ATV4 and Plex running on Dual Core with 4x 4TB HDD's

Must have's
Gigabit ethernet port
USB 3 ports
Netflix, Hulu etc must work HDR, 4K - apparently most Droid boxes are stuck on 1080p?


Ideas other than Nvidia Shield?

I just have issues with plex and ATV4 not showing the library or taking ages to play a video (transcode)
The ATV4 has apps to play the files directly but they takes ages to show the library, circle round and round.

In the past I have had success connecting droid box to ext usb drive so having both ext and streaming would be ideal.

ATV 4k does support all those apps in 4k. But no usb ports.

Is everything direct playing?

It's probably something transcoding and your server can't handle it.

Not sure about direct playing, some videos series and movies start after couple seconds , others buffer , think I’ll try i7 dell laptop I have.

Have the PMS dashboard open on your phone or something and then play a file you know buffers and see what it says:

If you're getting a new Samsung, LG or even certain Hisense models, you don't need the box.
My Samsung NU7100 does everything you mentioned and handles 4k content flawlessly.

As far as boxes are concerned, both already mentioned in this thread are good.
Just DON'T go for the Skyworth Binge because of the lower price.

Well my master plan hasn't worked out, my dad had a 40" Sinotec that died and he went and bought a replacement, I thought I could get that repaired cheaply and add on a box and save some cash. Repairer says the TV needs a new motherboard and it will cause issues with the display.

So, since I'll have to go out and buy a new TV anyway, I'm looking at a Hisense 43A5600PW or 43A6100UW instead. Don't really want to splash out since it'll be the second TV, but a smart TV it'll have to be. Kinda works out the same as new TV + box. Samsung is an option too, but I don't really want to spend the extra +-R1k if I don't have to.

I'm guessing like most smart TV's the Samsung does Netflix, Showmax with ease, can I also use DStv Now?

Picked up the nu7100 on sale for R4999 at game on Tuesday (43 inch)quite happy so far.. Any specific settings I should adjust to to get the most out of it(I'm a noob when it comes to TVs)

That's a steal! the 43 normally retails for close to R7k.

You should have no issues straight out of the box.
The TVs built-in media player works perfectly for videos (I use plex instead though) and all the major apps just works.

The bottleneck on even cheap Android TV isn't going to be 4K... It'll be the Gbit port and USB3.0

I couldnt stream 4k from my media server on the ethernet port of my Hisense. I ended up getting an Nvidia shield which is an absolute brute of a device

It is... You pay for it though!

But what I mean is the LIT does 4k HDR Netflix, YouTube etc... As does the Mi Box. Most the Android TVs have similar hardware, so that shouldn't be an issue.

But I don't know any cheap or even mid level box with Gbit ports

Just looking for some advice here.

We want to get a TV in the bedroom upstairs, linking it to the DSTV downstairs in the lounge so that it shares the same feed isn't an option for the wife, I'm also not keen on the extra decoder and extra view option either since we are getting fibre shortly and we've got a Netflix subscription that we have access to also. So I thought the best option would be a TV with some kind of box and from there watch things through the Dstv Now, Showmax and Netflix apps?

This box would need to be able to connect via wifi and be fairly easy for her to operate.

Suggestions please!

Hi. I highly suggest a Hisense smart TV. The new models comes preloaded with netflix, showmax, dstvnow, browser, app store etc. Its linux based which has been proven to be faster than android interfaces when it gets a bit older.

4 year warranty compared to 2 years on other brands. Locally produced and thus good support, service centre in CPT and factory in Atlantis which means original remotes, TV feet/stand replacements are ezpz. The remote even has a Netflix button at the bottom so the wifey does not have to use the UI etc.

I personally have an older model (43k3110 FHD smart) and i had some issues with my netflix app, downloaded the new firmware from their local website and it was perfect. (they update it quite often too and are looking into OTA or "over the air updates" in the future)
