Hi there guys,

It seems there isn't a thread that simply states which is the best uncapped package for cheap cheap (or I simply couldn't find it), so im looking for a 1mb/s uncapped internet package for less than R300 (no line rental or anything, just the cap, or lack thereof hopefully). Whats the best? So far I see I need to avoid afrihost, and openweb silver. Whats webafrica like? And mweb?

Hi crysis

If you send me your contact number then I can arrange for a consultant to give you a 7 day trial account for you to test.

MWEB Guy

Well i tried Afrihost, which was fine initially until they throttled me to the extend that i couldn't get me out of it within a 3 week period. They did indicate the throttle is based on an average (which can be anything, but at the point where i asked it was supposedly about 50GB) .

WebAfrica is also using a throttling mechanism, but theirs are on a much shorter schedule, which i assume means you can at least get out of it within a week if you do get throttled (but also means you get throttled much sooner) . But haven't used their uncapped offering, so can't comment on quality.

I'm now on Mweb, which is so far full speed without issues, but i'll see what happens when i hit somewhere between 50GB-100GB. I won't be surprised if they also squeeze the line at some point in some form, as long as i can figure out when and how to get my speed back if i do hit that point :)

Of course i don't have issues with throttles and shaping on an uncapped product, it seems to be par for the course on the cheaper offerings . As long as it is -clear- when and for how long it will happen, i can at least plan and deal with it . So WA at least it's up front and clear , Afrihost i now know they throttle, but you don't really know when and for how long (it doesn't reset month end either) . Mweb , remains to be seen.

Don't forget Telkom is running a 1MB/s uncapped offering now too: http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-1mbps/

As you can see there, catch 22 :
Speed Restrictions
6am - 6pm: up to 472 kbps
6pm - 10pm: up to 767 kbps
10pm - 6am: up to 1 Mbps
No restriction on local data

So they are down to throttling you from the start.

MWEB ftw

Hi, I've had uncapped with Mweb for both home and work now for months, and I have never experienced any problems.

I game extensively, and pings are always good locally, and acceptable internationally. I'm not a chronic downloader, but I browse various sites every day and grab what I find interesting, and I almost always get a full 400kb/s speed, any time of day or night.

I also stream alot of content live, like sports and Esports, and hardly ever have any trouble watching at least a decent 480p stream, and most of the time a full 720p stream. Some months I go up to 50 or so gigs, and some I go to over 300 gigs, and never ANY throttling whatsoever.

On the rare occasions when there are cable faults or other technical issues, the connection may slow down significantly, but remains usable, and downtime is minimal.

Mweb, when you can, cheaper will be better, but for now, well done on a quality service!

My MWEB account has improved since launch and I'm happy with my 1MB/s account. I've hit 120GB (for me that's a lot) and wasn't throttled at all.

I tried a couple of isp options a while ago and I ended back at mweb. For the price they are unbeatable, some say open web gold is better but it is 50% more expensive.
