Well i tried Afrihost, which was fine initially until they throttled me to the extend that i couldn't get me out of it within a 3 week period. They did indicate the throttle is based on an average (which can be anything, but at the point where i asked it was supposedly about 50GB) .
WebAfrica is also using a throttling mechanism, but theirs are on a much shorter schedule, which i assume means you can at least get out of it within a week if you do get throttled (but also means you get throttled much sooner) . But haven't used their uncapped offering, so can't comment on quality.
I'm now on Mweb, which is so far full speed without issues, but i'll see what happens when i hit somewhere between 50GB-100GB. I won't be surprised if they also squeeze the line at some point in some form, as long as i can figure out when and how to get my speed back if i do hit that point
Of course i don't have issues with throttles and shaping on an uncapped product, it seems to be par for the course on the cheaper offerings . As long as it is -clear- when and for how long it will happen, i can at least plan and deal with it . So WA at least it's up front and clear , Afrihost i now know they throttle, but you don't really know when and for how long (it doesn't reset month end either) . Mweb , remains to be seen.
Don't forget Telkom is running a 1MB/s uncapped offering now too:
http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-1mbps/
As you can see there, catch 22 :
Speed Restrictions
6am - 6pm: up to 472 kbps
6pm - 10pm: up to 767 kbps
10pm - 6am: up to 1 Mbps
No restriction on local data
So they are down to throttling you from the start.
