Hi guys,

My wife and I moved into a new house over the weekend, which does not have an ADSL line.

Telkom says that they will only install a line on March 1, 2011, because they are useless idiots and should all go to hell and die. *rant over*

I was a 4MB MWEB Uncapped subscriber and it seems that my only option ATM is to get WiMax and get uncapped wireless.

Could anyone please recommend any options?

Check the following a weigh your options:

1. Screamer has several options as well --> www.screamer.co.za
2. Telkom has uncapped WiMAX but it is limited to 512Kbps you also pay R210 for CPE no option to buy it out. --> www.screamer.co.za

try www.sonicwireless.co.za if you are in cape town

Looked at these now, I'm not a very bandwidth intensive user while at home... the odd browsing and maybe xbox live game but nothing hectic... I used to get away with a 1gb cap in the past ...lol

These seem reasonable, and seeing as I do not intend using telkom at the new house, a wireless solution seems the only other option.

What's the stability of these solutions though...

Apologies, I am fairly a noob when it comes to things like these.

Stay away from wireless you will regret it sooner or later, stick with DSL safest option

i can only speak for myself...and so-far have had no issues...
Had telkom adsl but i'm back on wireless, much cheaper than what i used to spend/waste on telkom

Lol... not quite the reponse I was looking for as I REALLY want move away from DSL...I mean u need to pay for DSL line rental and Analogue line rental, even though you use your line purely for internet and incur no usage for voice traffic using the analogue line... I feel it's a rip off.

Going the uncapped/unshaped Neobroadband route too expensive based on what type of user I am...it's just not worth spending the $ if I'll only be using max 5GB of data a month...definately do not want mweb's uncapped service after reading the horror stories on MyBB...lol

I was previously with MWEB, but will reconsider my options when the time to buy is there again.

Thanx guys

slumdawg what area are you in?

The house we bought is in Wynberg and will be looking at a connection there after we've moved.

Oh, wait, that was posted here already...

Wireless can be just as good as ADSL, sometimes even better.

Line of sight/stationary wireless solutions are the business. I.e. WiMax and what Amobia uses. Roaming wireless solutions are where you start experiencing problems (like over contention at towers; there's no control over it!)

Even Telkom uses microwave technology for back-haul in some areas.

If Amobia covered my area I would move to them in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I live in Hennopspark (Centurion), and Amobia does not have infrastructure there.

I will call Screamer/Neotel/Mweb with regard to the Wimax

I plan to use neweservers a lot, as well as you tube, itunes and general browsing. Which of the above has the most lenient Fair Usage Policies?

Remember using wimax will cost you about R2000 just for the installation, and their cost per month will be more or less the same than DSL. I use wimax because I don't have an alternative, I cannot get telkom where I live. My current ISP is the third one I have used in a year, and I'm still not satisfied. My current ISP is stable, but they charge me R130 per gb which is insane as you can imagine. Just go read the screamer thread if you want to get a taste of wimax.

Just my 5 cents

Hi Guys

Thanks for the interest in our products.

Hi FunkyToz

Good news, we will hopefully be adding another new tower in your area soon. So you new house should get LOS to one of our highsites.

Mr.Jax

Mr.Jax is 100% correct here. Wireless can outperform ADSL any day provided you have clear LOS and a decent signal.

ADSL works well, and I will not lie to you and say ADSL is bad and always go wireless, but when your ADSL line goes down then you might have to wait a week for a resolution. When your wireless CPE goes down, it can be fixed within a few hours and max a day or so.

Feel free to PM me for any direct questions or I will try my best to respond to them here

Seems like my options are getting more and more limited.

Screamer will not be doing any installations this year and Amobia and Neotel do not cover my area :(
