Would be interested in knowing this. I have Telkom WiMax which have been MORE than happy with BUT now they are "busy on the tower in your area" and so no internet for over a week!!! Now the interesting thing i noticed before it went off, and using newgroups, I used to get around 58kb/s MAX when downloading. I have noticed, in the last 3 weeks - excluding the week just past - i have been getting up to 92kb/s. SO - question is has the WiMax speeds increased with Telkom??

Please let this be true. Also, they must start "selling" it again.

Well i am not sure if they will start selling it again because their support doesn't even have a menu item when you call in. You have to get to ADSL and IF you are lucky someone there will know what WiMax is and transfer you to the correct people for support requirements.

The nice thing is, yes it is ONLY 512kb, it is CHEAP and it serves it's purpose well as i don't do online gaming except flight simming and it handles that MORE than fine! I think WISP's need to revisit their pricing model i.e. equipment RENTAL of R2999.00 once off. What they are actually saying is that you BUY The equipment and they keep it so you gain NOTHING by having them as a WISP or spending tons of money. I have no issue paying R2999 and KEEP the equipment and that EXCLUDES a R650 installation fee.

Well nice thing now is the new CPA of 31 March 2011 if i don't get the service from a company like that I request they CANCEL my service and refund me that fee :)

I will wait and see what happens with Telkom in the next week and then make some decisions but I don't see any WISP having coverage in President Park - Midrand :(

At least I can get a credit from Telkom if the service is not given.

I agree. Purchasing the CPE, paying for installation and then still the monthly fee of WISPs are just 2 much. I am however gonna talk with whomever phones me back that can supply wireless internet and ask then if they can't do like a 24month contract thingy, where you pay monthly for the CPE and internet access...

I had telkom wimax in the past and it was perfect for me for online gaming and I am sure it will still be, but alas... we can't get it. :(

Well i will be interested who you go with - which area of Midrand are you? I was lucky - i got my WiMax via WHO i knew - i did the 2010WC and was IT Venue Manager for Soccer City so built up some GOOD contacts in Telkom and that is the ONLY way i managed to get it.

I am in noordwyk.

Then why did you only get a 512 connection...? :p

Try DC Connect (http://www.dcconnect.co.za), they've got good coverage in Centurion. You also get a 50% Discount on equipment and installation, if you sign up for Uncapped Unshapped Wireless Internet. Prices are as follows: 384K = R499 p/m, 512K = R699 p/m and 1Mb = R1,299 p/m.

No offence bro, but I'd rather use Amobia then. You pay ~R800 for an uncapped 3Mbit link and they have coverage in Centurion. 384 is something like ~R300 p/m uncapped.

They're apparently also running a special on the CPE...~R1000 I believe.

NOW THAT is a GREAT question - alas - I had to go with what the infrastructure supported and even they said it may never be increased :(

It's a pitty to see such a great service that isn't taken further. It's the ONLY real alternative to adsl I have ever seen...

Absolutely correct. However, my internet was back up yesterday afternoon and this moring it is down again!!! Can you believe this!! So i think i will contact Amobia!

OK i have booked a LOS test with Amobia!! Thinking either 2MB or 3MB uncapped!!

I guess the question would be how aggressive is their shaping?? I don't want a trickle with newsgroups etc!! i.e. MWEB block newsgroups or allow almost NO bandwidth for that!
