I'm looking for a protein supplement for myself as I'm going to be starting gym in order to gain some muscle and mass.

Hard to decide which one to get because firstly there seems to be tons of brands out there and each person has their own opinion on which is the right one. Secondly it seems that prices these days are ridiculous. Even the local brands are nearing R700 upwards for a 2kg.

In any case I was looking at the SSN whey protein from dischem which sells for R699. Any reviews on this item or a preferred item which you think is good?

Any advise appreciated , thanks

p.s did a search on the forum but most threads seem outdated

Before you move to choosing the brand, you need to first decide on what goals you are pursuing that you want your protein supplement to assist you with, there are as many different proteins as brands (whey, lean, casein etc.). Assuming from the above your choice is 100% whey, in my opinion, after researching and using quite a few brands myself - Evox is the best price/quality on the local market. If money is not an issue no doubt ON is no.1 worldwide. SSN was a bit sweet for my taste, which makes me feel that there are some additives and that's not something you want in 100% whey.

I agree with Zukat Evox is great. I used their Synergy Whey, Choc Mint is my favorite, for quite some time.

But I have been using USN Hardcore Whey since the beginning of the year and have been very happy with it. The 2kg sells for R435 on takealot.

Also if you live in Cape Town the Hypermarket in Ottery and the Makro close by have supplement guys who are very helpful and will give you advice to exactly what you need.

Glad you getting good results from the Hardcore Whey, that thing used to bloat me big time.

Never had a issue with that and it is quite a bit cheaper than the Synergy which the last time I checked was R650. But I do miss the Choc Mint though and it tastes a bit better with water.

Canned pilchards is like 25% protein, on a 410g can you get 100g of proteins for around R12.

That would be impossible for me to stomach

Please remember the following: A supplement is there to supplement your dietary intake, not replace it.

Ive taken thousands of rands of supplements over the last decade. In the end, no amount of supplements will beat the following:
1. An effective gym program
2. Enough rest
3. Balanced diet
4. No Drinking.

IMO, get these 4 aspects in order, and do it consistently before buying any supps. Otherwise you wasting your own time and money.

Edit: Putting emphasis on the fact that you are a beginner or only "starting to gym", you dont need to take any supps.

Outdated no you should have come to this thread on mybb: The Bodybuilders Thread: Circuit II

BTW that soya protein is bull****. If your budget is around R699 then Nutritech, SSN, Evox are good enough for you.

That is your uninformed opinion.

The soy protein is pure protein...nothing weird added to it and it is a complete protein, in other words in has all 9 amino acids. I use it to supplement my diet, which is vegetarian.
