Canned pilchards is like 25% protein, on a 410g can you get 100g of proteins for around R12.

OK, so I bought a tin during lunch, 17g protein per 100g, 410g tin for R 15.99, so thats 68g of protein for 16 bucks. Now to see if I can stomach the stuff. Going to mix in some rice and see whats what.

Ok, so managed about 3/4 of the tin before i gave up. Dog had the rest. I think I will try some of those recipes online, otherwise it's back to tuna at 3 times the price

Was this for a meal or a snack? How many times a day do you eat? How much time between meals? What's the breakdown of your macros per meal?

Had it as a snack. I do 5 meals per day, plus one protein shake. I struggle with keeping the time between meals constant, my day can get quite hectic, so sometimes I have meals within a couple of hours of one another. Haven't calculated my macros per meal, suppose I should, but I am aiming at roughly +-240 protein, +-370 carbs and +-60 fat per day.

I need to stay in excess of 3000 calories a day to gain (very slowly that is). I really struggle to gain weight - was sick for 2 weeks and dropped nearly 2kg due to not eating properly. Takes me about a month to gain 0.5 kg at the current rate.

That is your uninformed opinion.

The soy protein is pure protein...nothing weird added to it and it is a complete protein, in other words in has all 9 amino acids. I use it to supplement my diet, which is vegetarian.

Besides for tasting extremely k@k, and i do mean EXTREMELY. Last time i heard it increases estrogen levels, so i'll rather stay clear.

Quite honestly the k@k taste alone is enough for me to not even take it for free, it really is horrible, there is not one single thing you can mix it with to mask that taste. I can't emphasize enough on how bad this tastes, BCAA tastes good compared to this, If you do manage to keep it down, your stomach is not going to be very happy.
I bought 2kg of this cr@p 2 years back, I probably had 3 shakes and chucked the rest. Rather buy unflavored concentrate, it a bit more expensive but much better IMO.

*Big edit, It was PEA protein, not SOY Protein, my bad!!
But its definitely Soy protein that i heard increases estrogen.

That is a bullschit story someone made up. There' no proof of it.

I've been using it for more than 2 years and I eat Soy products almost daily and I have yet to grow boobs.

I have no been affected in any way at all.

With you on the pea protein though...I had that first..it's like putty when you TRY and mix it with liquid.

Agree with Method, there is no proof. It is probably a story made up by the guys that sell whey protein to sell their own product. Soy is just as good as whey amino acid wise.

How does Soy protein taste?, If it does not taste bad i'll give it a go, 2.5KG @ R180 its very affordable.

I've known some hard gainers (not a problem I have myself *wobbles belly*), and they skipped the whey and went straight to those mass builders. Too much of those per day will just make you fat though... So I still recommend proper food at the proper times, and lots of rest.

Also, that's a lot of protein, and not lot of carbs, if you're trying to gain. IMHO.

It doesn't taste like much. If you add it to water it will be crap, and of you add it to milk it will give the milk a chunky texture, but it will be milky.

I add chocolate flavoured soy milk in mine or I use normal soy milk and add coco powder and a sweetener like Agave.

The flavours they give just smell like Strawberry or Chocolate...when you mix it, the taste is gone so that's why I mix it with flavoured milk.

I also had that idea, think I will switch over after this bag of whey. Tried gaining lean, so the carbs are on the low side, but that's clearly not working for me.

Argh, I hate this experimenting with food, takes ages to see what works and what not.

The most commom misconception is that you need to take protein in the form of shakes to build muscle.Unless you are a hardgainer , you can gain muscle mass by just eating correctly.Start with just eggs (Rocky style) because an egg is 97% bv index as compared to 40 for a normal mass shake. On the other hand whey protein concentrate is 100 on the bv scale but that cost alot of money, so to answer your question , the best value for money protein is eggs.

Nutritech. R639 for 3.2kgs. It's also by far the best tasting protein. Go for the banana cream, vanilla, or cookies and cream flavours.

I've tried most brands, including Evox, USN, Biogen, Weider, SSN, ON, and Muscletech. Nothing comes close to the value and taste of Nutritech.

I drink 2 of these a day.

You can get it at any Chrome supplement shop.

Outdated no you should have come to this thread on mybb: The Bodybuilders Thread: Circuit II

BTW that soya protein is bull****. If your budget is around R699 then Nutritech, SSN, Evox are good enough for you.

Soya contains iso-flavones that mimic oestrogen. Studies have shown long term use to reduce testosterone in men.

Not sure if present in an isolate but best to make sure. You're not gonna grow or get stronger much with low testosterone.

Actually there is. This article has some references: http://www.westonaprice.org/health-...lowers-testosterone-in-strength-training-men/

My anecdotal experience is that after eating lots of soy as a child I was a head shorter and lots skinnier than my father or brother. Could never gain muscle till I cut soy out of my diet.

Define? Weeks, months, years?

Best value protein is beans and maize. Boil them both and blend it well, and slurpie.

I will be able to help any1 with advice in the fitness area if needed.
I am a qualified personal trainer and I have my Gauteng North colours as a classic Bodybuilder, went to SA's last year and placed 6th :)

If you guys are talking about Natural Food Protein, then there is 1 ultimate source far above the rest. EGGS !
