Im looking for a free or cheap app to install a VoIP line onto an iPhone. I've tried Zoiper but it has an annoying tendency to disregard the mute switch and ring even when it should be vibrating only.

Any other suggestions?

Skype works well, not sure you can get local SA number. The same Viber. For standard SIP client (like Zoiper) you must query your SIP provider whether their server support TCP notification system (for incoming calls), as Apple server don't accept UDP protocol (standard for SIP). If you configure app to run in the background, it will eat battery.

As for SIP clients I can't say much, as I use it in emergency only. Many free SIP clients are branded versions of the same app (MobileVIOP, SipGo). If you find decent freebe with G729 codec, let us know.

It's actually to use a local UK number via Sipgate, I've got it running on an android phone using Zoiper, but even that seems to eventually go to sleep. I'll look at using Skype again, but I don't think they give a free genuine STD landline number for incoming calls iirc which is needed.

I use Bria, the "sleeping" of apps is a problem for me as well, but according to people here I'm the one that can't configure my devices.

I haven't, I'll try that when I get the phone in hand later.

Bria has lots of bad reviews, so I hadn't considered it.

I may just buy an IP desktop phone or ATA adapter if the apps don't do as they should as it doesn't have to be mobile but reliable incoming calls are the most important factor.

I currently use B315s on Cell C with analog phone connected to the router.

I've only just started looking into an ATA or similar, cheapest I can find looks like the Grandstream HandyTone 701.

Having said that, checking the online dashboard seems to show that Zoiper has remained awake all morning using the Android version..

This seems to want some sort of proprietary hardware to work, installed on my iPhone to test and it refuses to register saying it can't find 3cx hardware...

And checking the sip dashboard and the Zoiper android phone has gone to sleep at some stage since my last post, "no active handset found" :(
