Hi guys

Just looking to get a VPN for my computer and phone, please recommend the best/cheap VPN available.

Also if there are any free VPN.

Thanks

The cheapest VPN option is to monitor Humble Bundle. Every year there are a few cybersecurity bundles that include 6-12 months of a random VPN, and you get other cool stuff in the bundles too. I'm still using my Private Internet Access 12 month sub from a $12 Humble Bundle. Previously I've had Cyberghost and Nord, both of which were great.

Private Internet Access is probably the best one I've used thus far. PIA and Nord are frequently mentioned as the best VPNs out there. Go with one of them.

Don't use a free VPN. Sounds super sketchy. And don't just chase the cheapest or your entire connection will suck.

Are their servers ok or overloaded?

I just ran around on the phone after installing it, whats my IP shows I'm in Amsterdam, overall it seems quick, I loaded a couple of random browser pages and apps on the phone, there is no change that I can notice apart from FB somehow being quicker but that's probably just random.

Will report on battery life later.

Make sure you have a decent firewall setup on the device dialing the VPN, once you dial that VPN you get a public IP asigned to whatever device you are using and it's not blocking any incomming connections, you expose your device to the world with these VPN's...

Once dialed from home PC I get IP:

Can ping it from work... so now that PC is exposed to the world....

At least get a VPN that has a App that has a built in firewall.....

For now I'm on the phone, so I don't really have the option to setup a proper firewall say for another app.

That said I will be connecting to the internet from the PC through the phone via hotspot so I'll have to check it out.

No don't worry this one seems fine now, I re-connected now I get a private IP, not sure why it showed that IP on my adapter and on the internet, so that's fine, but slow at the moment

I'll do some speedtests throughout the day

Without VPN over 10Mb line

i tried MullVad, it was terribly slow.

I bought ExpressVPN and its been magical... basically it caps my line to about 200Mbps (have 1Gbps fibre at home). Posted this on carb recently, these are my speed tests.

Source: Singapore
VPN: ExpressVPN
Connection Type: 4G (speeds vary due to network usage, signal etc. between test 1 and 2 - 10 min apart )
SpeedTest: SpeedTest app on Mate 10 Pro
Test Mode: Single Connection (Recommended by the App for VPN testing)

Test 1:
No VPN:
Down 28Mbps, Up: 22Mbps

Singapore Server:
Down: 28Mbps, Up: 23Mbps

USA Los Angelas server:
Down: 27Mbps , Up 16.7Mbps

South African Server:
Down: 27Mbps, Up: 5Mbps

Test 2:
No VPN (Singtel):
Down 40.5Mbps, Up: 22Mbps

Singapore Server (Singtel):
Down: 36.5Mbps, Up: 14Mbps

USA Los Angelas server (Frontia):
Down: 33.3Mbps , Up 16.7Mbps

South African Server (Vodacom):
Down: 39.7Mbps, Up: 5Mbps

I've used ProtonVPN on-and-off when connecting to unsecured hotspots. The free servers work alright and the speeds are beyond 10Mb/s 99% of the time for me.
